Location is a big deal for many people especially with family reasons. Like my first choice based on family will most likely be OSU-COM (my husband will be in that area hopefully). If not my top based on what I know (and what I haven't seen yet) would be:

PCOM-Philly
KCUMB
UMDNJ (been there many times)
WVCOM (way expensive 🙁 )

Mostly based on the fact I wouldn't mind relocating to those areas as I'm familiar with 3 of the 4 but know people at the one I don't know much about (WVCOM).

WVSOM

Pro's:

-2 thumbs up to the people at Lewisburg. They are really friendly and helpful.

-I liked the school setting. Their campus is spread out with buildings for labs, lectures, recreation etc as opposed to having one building facilitate all functions (dont want to name this school)

-primary care emphasis

-3rd and 4th year rotations can be done anywhere around the state. This would allow me to move closer to the east coast and visit family more often.

Could be pro or Con

-Starting this year they are expanding their incoming class to 200 from 100. I hope they'll recruiting additional faculty.

Cons

-Out of State tuition

-No food take out or delivery after 10 pm

-Nothing much to do except study, which is good in a way.

CCOM, because of location to family and city, match list, and respect in the Chicago medical community.

PCOM or NYCOM. If I am lucky enough to get an interview at both schools I will have to make a list of pro's and con's and figure out which school better suits me.

UNECOM -

I am from New England and their cost of living is relatively low compared to Western, Nova, and Touro-MI.

I've had the opportunity to talk to staff about UNECOM and have received positive input.

Good match list.

OUCOM -- Location, also their tropical medicine institute.

The folks who posted up about picking for reasons other than location are guys, yes?

Wonder if there is a correlation?

Uh, no. strawberryfield = female. look at profiles. i picked the best school based on atmosphere and match etc. if i had wanted to be near my family i would be at LECOM-PA or OU-COM. i wanted what PCOM had to offer.

Are you telling me that you call Athens, Ohio a, "tropical medicine institute"?

Has to be OSU, not only because I am going there but their faculty are great, consistently one of the best ranked schools (rankings aren't always true), Board scores always in the top of the country. How many people can say they are a poke, anyways?

MSU- location

Which ever one accepts me!

If they all did, it would be tied b/w UNECOM & PCOM. UNECOM b/c its closest to home and pretty good, and PCOM b/c of it's reputation.
But once I get into applications, and hopefully interviews, the whole thing could change.

PCOM-GA or AZCOM- if I get accepted to both, I'll take GA because of location. I know it is kind of lame, but my husband and I like the south.

Not really, but they are an osteopathic school showing interest in infectious disease education, one of my interests. Do you know any other osteopathic schools that have programs geared to ID? I would like to know.

CCOM- for its location, reputation, and I work with an EXCELLENT EM DO that went there.

WCOMP--would ideally like to stay in California, plus its one of the top DO programs.

also,

WVSOM and DMUCOM

I have no clue about what schools have "programs geared to ID". That being said, OUCOM is up there on my list also.

PCOM - awsome school, great reputation, excellent matching. Seems from this thread i'm not the only one with this opinion 🙂

On campus? Or is it a state law, or something?

Haha, apparently you've never spent any time in the area. Pretty much every small town shuts down after 10 PM weeknights. If you're lucky, it's 11 on weekends! My hometown is DEAD after 10 PM. All the stores close before 9 PM. Unless you're going to a bar, you generally stay home. If you need something you've gotta drive to the closest Super WalMart. 😛

Considering I haven't checked out most of the places yet I will stick with Nova.......I hate the traffic and crap down there but I love the fact I can chill with my brother and nephew, go sailing/fishing (when I have the chance) AND a big plus..my brother would rent a house to me for next to nothing by southern florida standards. Weather plays a big role with me as well...moods and general health. 2 of the new Radiologists at my hometown hospital are from nova as well...PCOM because of friends and i am a penn stater so I could live with one of my friends there (I generally do better when I DON'T live with someone taking the same courses....going by my history at least) not to mention I've met a bunch of people in ER medicine, anes and all that good stuff from there. While I don't want to say I DON'T like IM or Family or anything ...just don't want to limit myself from the beginning since I seem to like to get inspired and change my mind.lol

I wouldn't go to any of the DO schools.. I am choosing a caribbean school where i can get a real degree.. MD.. Ha ha ha... Just kidding, DO schools rock! My top choices before i got interviews or anything were as follows..

1. TCOM (I live in Dallas, TX)
2. Touro-NV (i'm going here)
3. Midwestern-AZ
4. Touro-CA
5. OSUCOM

UNECOM,

-not flashy, less business oriented like other med school
-friendly student body and faculty
-good match list for post grad training
-liberal new england

I second that sentiment. I did not choose KCOM for location, but rather reputation, match list, "med school" feel 😉

KCOM! I can’t stress how much the staff is there for helping the incoming student doctors. Having a hospital on the campus is a huge plus too. I was accepted at an MD school, RUSH, and it was a no brainier to go to KCOM.

KCOM Class of 2010

I totally agree with you there-- the student support system is TOP notch and I was floored when I got a Christmas card from them!!!! 😀 I felt so loved! And for me it's the little things that stand out, like them putting "trips home" in the student budget, (not just "personal travel expenses") and all of the medical mission work they are involved in (like the summer after MS1 South Africa trip)

I am on the waitlist at PSU (my top choice--a lot of similar qualities as KCOM, but close to family), but if I don't get in there I will be totally happy going to KCOM!! 😀 they are one of the best DO schools IMO and have a great reputation in the medical community 😍

for those of you who are considering WVSOM the incoming class size is expected to increase to 200 which is up from 108 last year. this is according to my comparison of the 2007 and 2006 Osteopathic Medical College Information Books, respectively.

Nova- the Dean's really cool handlebar moustache

Having the rescources of a full undergrad/grad/proffesional university, one of the nicest college campuses i've seen, good clinicals, plans to build their own affiliated hospital, and awesome location all help too....

Yo, how did u find out your position on the waitlist. I would like to know mine. But I guess may be it is too late to know now?

How are your classes going? I finally ended up graduating. Hopefully, you are almost done.

KCUMB was my top choice, because of their systems-based curriculum plus they allow you to schedule your 3rd yr electives and entire 4th yr anywhere you want (which will be awesome when it comes to interviewing for residencies), while still setting up your clinical rotations. I also am from St. Louis, but love Kansas City.

What about PCOM (Georgia Campus)?

Thanks for the info. I just e-mailed her. Hopefully, I can find out soon so I can plan for next year. Man, its been a rough year with the app. process.

Ultimately I just want to practice medicine, so I really don't care where I go, but I my first choice is VCOM. I got my undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech, and loved it there. I was also very impressed by VCOM's anatomy lab. I was invisioning a dark, stinky dungeon, but it had lots of windows with a beautiful view and a state of the art air filtration system. I don't tolerate bad smells very well, so this is a huge plus.

I agree! I would pick the same, but I am definitely excited to be back on the west coast after going to school in Omaha!

I love that this is such a non-biased poll.
"XCOM all the way baby!"
(then you look at their signature and it says XCOM  )
lame. 👎

BTW, DMU is by FAR the best medical school in the entire world! 😉

kcumb-because I absolutely loved their curriculum-their students seemed very happy-and they treated me so well when was interviewing. Plus, I like being around a big city. And oh, the DO/MBA program in 4 years was a HUGE perk. I'm def. going to do the dual degree program.

WCOMP's vast majority of students are california residents, so that might be some of the reason its not on everyones list.

Great school though...probably one of the best.

You guys can also add PCOM and KCOM to my list!

VCOM... Go Hokies!!!
yes, they brainwash their students. we are all diehard fanatics.
