Hi everyone. I'm a soon to be M1 and current MPH student interested in psychiatry.

I am working on a cost-effectiveness project examining traditional and atypical antipsychotic medications for first-episode psychosis. While I know atypicals are the more widely used of the two, are there formal first-episode psychosis treatment guidelines freely available for me to look at? The reason I ask is because I am considering the different strategies (pharmacological) one can take in treating such a patient. I am basically looking for a textbook guideline of standard treatment practices. Can anyone help me out?

Here is a relatively recent article from the AJP (American Journal of Psychiatry) that was dealing with what was a hot topic at the time - the neuroprotectiveness of early intervention antipsychotic treatment in first break episodes. It has some references that may be of use to you.

I'm not sure if this link to the APA (American Psychiatric Association) will work if you're not a member. It has the guidelines you're looking for.

Both have useful information which can help me out. Thanks for your help!
