I have my first interview ever on November 3 and I know about the interview section on the website but my question is what to wear. I am essentially a hick that loves science and I don't want to show up to this interview in a shirt and tie then see a bunch of people in fancy suits. What would you were if you to an interview. Sorry to sound all over the place just nervous.

Definitely wear a suit. At all of my interviews only one or two people were ever not wearing them.

definately look professional (wear a suit), be on time or EARLY, be prepared to be energetic and professional at the same time, study up on SDN interview feedback...BTW can I ask where are you interviewing??

Wear a suit! If your clueless go to a store with salespersons that can help you pick out a style that works for you. Or enlist the help of an honest friend. Get grey or black, and a simple tie, dont forget you will need appropriate shoes (and socks!).

Its not impossible to be accepted wearing something else, but why risk it if your adcoms happen to be the traditional type?

Do you guys think that it is imperative for girls to wear the pant suit type outfit too? I had an interview at South a few weeks ago, and I wore a button-up shirt with a cardigan sweater and some dress pants, and there were only maybe 4 more girls who weren't wearing a suit.

I would say skirt over pantsuit, but I'm just a guy with no fashion sense.😳

PLEASE WEAR A SUIT!

For guys, black/blue suit with a lighter dress shirt (white, grey, blue, etc). Avoid black on black! Wear some CLEAN black dress shoes. And please, no clip on ties. WEAR BLACK SOCKS!!!! Be clean shaven with minimal piercings.

For girls, I'd highly recommend a suit. Skirt or pant suit, is doesn't matter (skirt has to be down/near to the knees). Wear a blouse but don't unbutton your shirt too much. =) Hair tied back if it's long. Minimal jewelry (small stud earrings and a watch should do). And NO OPEN TOED shoes. If wearing a skirt, pantyhouse/stocking is recommended. A small black purse for your belongings should work.

That is basically my "professional" advice.

Seriously, I've seen some horrible attires for interview days. One example is a guy wearing slacks (khaki colored) and a non-matching blazer (olive green) and a dark red dress shirt with a black tie with hiking boots AND WHITE SOCKS! 😡

What is that? You can't afford a new suit cause you're short on money? THREE WORDS: Burlington Coat Factory!!! They have brand new suits for $100-$200 (pants and jacket). In the SF Bay area, they have Clothing Broker's. Best damn store ever. Got my black suit for $110. For shoes, go to Mervyns and get a nice pair for $30. Dress shirt and ties go to Ross for $15 and $10.

I spent $170 and I looked like a million bucks! Apparently, when I lost 30 lbs 2 yrs ago, my old $500 Kenneth Cole suit from Macy's didn't fit me anymore. Funny thing is, I looked sharper in my "cheap suit" than I ever did in my $500 one.

Why can't girls where open toed shoes? 🙂

Last time, I saw some girls put heavy make up on, it's just a interview, not a beauty pageant.

Because it's "not professional." =) Back in undergrad, we (my bus. fraternity) used to conduct mock interviews. It's just one of those unwritten rules. I assume it's looked at as too flashy/casual. Falls under the same idea as loud bright red lipstick and huge hoop earrings and long LONG curly nails.
