In my first job out of residency with mixed feelings. I took the job because it was the best salary and work/life balance which remains to be true. I'm worried I'm going to stagnate though. It's a very small practice with little collaboration. People are very nice but just busy seeing patients/documenting and keep to themselves. Many challenging patients so I'm missing that collaborative environment. Kind of wish I would've stayed at my home institution in a learning environment. I was just so burned out at the end of residency and felt like I wanted to get away. Also new manager came on who seemed like a terror to work with.

I realize there's no perfect job but how long do you guys typically stay at a place before moving on if it's not the best fit? Again jobs not terrible but something is missing. Also how so you keep growing when you're kind of on your own.

Is there some way you can branch out in the community? Any local training programs looking for input? A non-profit looking for a board member? Local psychiatric society looking for some committed involvement? Volunteer gig, or PT non-profit job?

Have noticed that prescribing practices of psychiatric medications by primary care can be wacky at times. Was thinking of trying to get involved with them for collaboration/consultation to expand my horizons beyond my office.

Get an inpatient job if you want more collaboration. I don't think there is a set time you have to stay before switching jobs, but definitely read your contract to know how much notice you must give. I would guess around 3 months notice would be a very professional amount of time, could offer to stay longer if they're having trouble replacing you.

Your dream job doesn't exist. You have to create it. And by this I mean join a setting in which you take an active role in leadership or start your own practice so that you can set the parameters. Right now the parameters are set by people who don't know a damn thing about Psychiatry. Your growth is dependent on your ability to ask questions and solve problems. Once you stop solving problems and turn into a robot, your growth is limited by repetition and the expansion of your circle of influence will come to a grinding halt. If you want to settle for average or above average, there are plenty of those jobs out there-- just keep looking. IMO this wrong field to settle for average if you want to preserve your sanity and help others preserve theirs.
