Hey SDN!

When are you allowed to include ',SPT' in your name? Are you only able to include it once you have started PT school or will submitting a deposit and recognition of enrollment qualify me to include that?

I am in the process of doing presentations for a pre-health internship at my undergrad institution and I am unsure if I can include this in my name.

I honestly only ever used my SPT designation when in the clinic and needed to sign paperwork. I never included it on anything else. Also, you are not in PT school so I think it would be really tacky to include this on your undergrad presentation. You aren't in school yet.

Do you mean you "only" used the designation when in the clinic?

I use it when I send e-mails to professors and I will use it when I'm in the clinic. I don't feel right using DPT until I pass the board exam.

You earn your DPT designation by graduating from PT school, as it is an academic degree. You earn the right to sign paperwork PT, DPT by passing the boards as it is a licensure exam. So you would use SPT until you graduated from PT school, then DPT only until you passed the boards. Unless you're working on a temp license, in which case you sign PT, DPT after your name as if working fully licensed, because you are covered by your supervisor's license until you have your own. At least that's how it works in Texas.

Yep, only used it in the clinic, literally. Never typed it or wrote it otherwise. I would use DPT if I needed to now, because I graduated, but I have no need to yet!

(And thank you, I went back and edited my original response to include the only. My brain is a little scattered since the boards are tomorrow!)

Wait until you mistakenly sign the credit card machine at the grocery store as "FIRST LAST, PT DPT".

It varies state by state, but in Kentucky we can't use SPT, it's not a recognized designation on documentation. I have to sign Chrissy Watson, PT student on EVERYTHING.
