Any chance that adcoms will try to overlook my first semester? I got straight C's (in Orgo I, Calc I and a German class, but I guess the classes don't really matter). Please tell me I'm not the first freshman to get too excited about college life/independence and f*** up first semester.

Also, since it's a prereq, do I have to retake Orgo I even if I get an A in Orgo II?

I am so discouraged. 😡 If I can't hack these classes, should I even bother with the whole premed thing anymore?

No you arent the first freshman to f*** up. You live and you learn. Show drastic and sustained improvement and you have nothing to worry about.

It was, however, a mistake on your part to take Orgo without taking Chemistry first, regardless of your science background. Also, were you only taking 3 classes? Does that qualify you as a full time student at your school?

Prereqs only need a minimum grade of C, and anyways most schools won't let you retake a course in which you got C or above. If you take more science classes and end up with a good BCPM GPA (>3.5), you'll most likely be fine. Of course, your AO GPA has to be good as well.

BTW, why are you taking Organic Chemistry in your freshman year? What about your General Chem prereqs?

Do the math and you'll see you're fine. Same thing happened to me and I'll be finishing with a 3.65. I could have finished with a 3.8 or something if I'd have gotten straight A's since then. You may need to retake some classes.

You can easily finish college with a 3.5 which is good enough for most medical schools.

You can fix it, but I might consider retaking the science classes you got a C in. BTW, what the hell are you doing taking Orgo so early in your academic career. That's a REALLY hard class, and you should wait till AT LEAST your sophomore year, but I'd really recommend Junior year.

You have lots of time ahead of you. Figure out what you need to change about your study habits to improve your grades and just keep working. Good luck and don't get down on yourself!

Consider a different career path. You don't have the Right Stuff.

No, you're doomed.

Unless you do what the posters above said about doing better in the 3.5 years you have left.

Kill yourself or business school. You're out of the pre-med game.

In all seriousness everyone is right. Hopefully you've learned a lot from this experience, just get great grades from now on and be a doctor.

If I were to judge only from the number of similar threads which have recently sprung up here, I'd categorize what you did as the classic "I'm such a smart student that I can spend my first semester hedonistically enjoying my freedom and not worry about silly academics." The semester grade report acts as the wake up call.

You can turn it all around as long as you take that alarm seriously. It was JUST three classes. In the end, those will be just a drop in the GPA bucket & not make all that much difference in your final GPA. No, they won't overlook your first semester. It will stand for just what it was - either the time it took for you to get your act together, or the beginning of a messed up college career. How you perform from here out will determine which one that winds up being. The choice is yours.

I had AP Credit for general chemistry. I don't think it was my background that was the problem, it was more just the fact that I didn't open my book the entire semester. I'm an idiot.

I withdrew from an elective english class about a month into the semester. It had nothing to do with my grades; the class was an introduction to this "civic leadership" program that I was accepted to, but I decided I didn't like the philosophy of the program, so I had to withdraw from the class. I still technically had a full course load, though (12 credits). Next semester I'll have 16.

Thanks everyone!!

Easily? If he takes the same credit load for the next 3 years he can ONLY get a 3.5gpa if he gets straight 100% A's. I wouldn't say that's "easy."

Allow me to be the first to seriously say: Study hard and try your best to get good grades from this point on. But for the love of God, have a backup plan--your chances aren't stellar.

I guess the good news is that it has to pretty difficult not to have an upward trend after a 2.0 semester! haha, just kidding. First semesters are always tough go in there and kick some rear end, look at your study habits and what not to see what you think you did wrong. Good luck 👍

You're fine ... don't let people tell you otherwise. You screwed up your first semester in college, if you didn't like the results, you learned from the experience and you can now move on successfully. This can be overlooked if you show that it was because it was your first college experience, and that you can perform well.

He certainly is not fine, and I'd bet good money he will be back on the forum sophomore year asking for reassurance on post-graduate programs or D.O. schools. A proper work ethic isn't born from temporary embarrassment and attention seeking on StudentDoc.

There's no need to inflate his head with false hope. It could possibly be warranted if earned at least one or two B's, but he dug himself a straight C hole. 👎

If he gets straight A's he can get a 3.75. Assume this first semester was 15 credit hours out of 120; if it was less than 15 he can get even higher. He got straight C's, so he basically lost 7.5 out of 120 credits.
4 * 112.5/120 = 4* .9375 = 3.75
He can afford to get at least 5 more B's and still end up above 3.5.

Edit: I just noticed his post saying it was 12 credit hours, meaning that straight A's will leave him with a 3.8 at the end of undergrad. On the other hand, GPA after junior year is more relevant, because that's what goes on AMCAS initially. The highest he could be at that point is 3.73.

Dude.. you were obviously smart enough to place out of AP Chem... you are a bright kid. You just didn't work hard.

You can do it... same thing happened to me (3.0 first semester... 6 classes though... you only had 3, so you'll have an easier time raising it)... I'm a junior right now and have a 3.7 overall, 3.8 Science GPA ... and the thing is, I didn't even get all As since then. I think you can easily pull a 3.5 if you work hard. 👍

Btw, I got an A in Chem first semester by FAILING our final. It was 50 multiple choice... she said... if you missed all the questions, she'd give us a 100%... I risked it, tried it, and did it. Some people ended up with 2%, which sucked.. I mean, I had to fail a final to do well in the class.. not the other way around >.< The point is, my work ethic obviously sucked. But I fixed it and I've been doing better. Good luck.

He's obviously not too bright. Most likely he was just lucky enough to be born in an affluent white neighborhood that had mandatory AP classes. My money's on a 3 that slid by.

Be aware that some/many schools do not accept AP credits for prereqs, especially if you are not taking higher level courses in that area.

Oh, I didn't realize this forum has fallen to the maturity level of 4chan. 😴

I kind of like this approach. You obviously have to know the right answers to the questions in order to avoid marking the correct answer. However it also gives hope to the idiots, and then punishes them because chances are that they will mark a correct answer somewhere down the scantron. I'm guessing you can't just leave the answers blank with your name on it and turn it in for a 100%?

Get that MD acceptance first before you feel like giving out worthless critiques. It seems that your function on this forum is to insult people who are just trying to get some helpful feedback from the community. I don't think they need the "you will never make it so just quit" speech, especially from someone who is still a premed.

This person has a GPA of 2.0. Let me spell that out for you t w o - p o i n t - z e r o . You have to be high to believe this guy has a realistic shot at magically ****ting out a 4.0 for the next 7 semesters.

Next week we'll see posts about "How many F's did you get?" or "How bad is a 1.7 GPA?" and of course the Care Bear crowd will say "All is not lost, there's still hope! You will always have post-bacc!"

You're going to get banned pretty soon if you continue to bash and flame people. No one asked you to read the OP's thread about his situation regarding his GPA. You should just worry about you're situation, because clearly no one cares what you think.

First of all, I'm a girl.

Secondly, I'm a National AP Scholar. Translation: out of 8 AP exams, I got 6 5's (chemistry, biology, english language, german language, psychology, european history) and 2 4's (english literature, U.S. history). I took psych and lit on a whim; I wasn't enrolled in the classes. I started undergrad as a sophomore with 53 credit hours, which means that I'm already technically a junior. I could go on (34 ACT, 150+ IQ, etc.)...but, since I was just born in an affluent white neighborhood that had mandatory AP classes (I wasn't, FYI), it doesn't matter, right?:laugh: It's almost cute how you think you're clever and original.

I'm sure adcoms would rather admit a balanced, decent human being who ****ed up her first semester of college than a self-righteous, socially awkward jacka**, so keep on truckin' and open up that spot at Harvard for me, dear.

Jesus ****ing christ. This is why I never come to the pre-allo forum.

... with a 2.0 GPA. Yeah, right. I believe you.

If you honestly think that all "smart" people have 4.0's and all "stupid" people have 2.0's, I can't WAIT until you step into the real world. Do you live in a cave or something?

If you think you still have a chance to get into a US medical school with your grades, I can't wait until you waste thousands of dollars on post-bacc and applications. There's always chiropractor school, babe. 🙂

ok back to the original point of this post. it seems that most of us feel that you are going to be fine as long as you show improvement. and obviously your previous track record will help you as well. you know what you have to do--finish strong in the spring.

One thing that we can hope for is that Austin goes into interviews with the same attitude he displays on the boards.

OP, I remember you from previous posts as being an intelligent and capable person. You are not the only person he's been harassing with his attitude. He's already managed to get one thread closed down & that OP banned, even though it was AustinBum, not the OP whohe was the one acting out of line on there.

Like I said earlier. You are capable. This won't blow your chances at all. You just have to decide whether you will learn from your first semester experience & perform up to your capabilities from here on out. Once you've gotten on track, please remember what it was like for you and help support the next batches of students who have a difficult time adjusting to sudden freedom.

What part of "first semester" do you not understand? You clearly have problems with reading comprehension. I suppose I shouldn't expect too much from a 14-year old boy, however.

Austin is a troll. He does not seriously believe that you need a 4.0 to be intelligent, he is probably not a premed, he is probably not even in college. He is that kid that was so unpopular that his dungeons and dragons club told him not to come by any more, and his World of Warcraft guild kicked him out, so now he logs into large forums like SDN to harass users so he can pass the the time until his Mom comes home. Normally he would have been banned way before he got to 50 posts, but it's nearly Christmas and the Mods aren't around. Ignore him and his commentary.

I know, I know. He just really pissed me off. I need a chill pill.

We DO have the capability of pushing our ignore buttons to avoid reading posts by people we know are trolls. That way we don't reply to them and they lose encouragement.

OP: you're not the first, you're not the last.

Do well from here on out, maybe w/ a retake or two, and with a solid MCAT, and you should be alright.

Do excuse some of the people in this thread that have proven beyond a doubt that their IQs and shoe sizes are, in fact, the same ****ing number. (Oh, and "jesus ****ing christ" is one of my most frequent reactions to many a stupid or ridiculous post here.) Why is your username "under the bridge", besides matching the avatar?
