We have seen a decline in slots given to first year clinical rotations all around. Promised slots were declined citing funding issues. Anyone else experiencing this?

Seeing that in my program too, but it seems to be a widespread issue. Sites are having reimbursement issues with hosting students. There have been rumors that there will be a shift towards a PT residency instead of clinicals to fix this problem (similar to how medical schools are), but I'm not sure how long it will be before something like that comes about.

I heard of the possible residency shift. 12 months?

We don't have first-year clinicals here, since all clinical rotations are placed in the last year and a half of the program. But I do know that many students who are starting their clinical rotations next week found out where they're going last week. They've had almost no time to take care of logistics. Clin Ed had a hard time placing them. Should we expect this from now on?

I couldn't imagine getting a clinical placement notification the week before! Wow. That clinical residency (12 mo) is an interesting idea. What I have liked about my potential program is the clinical experiences throughout though. I feel like it will allow me to build up clinical skills throughout the curriculum and gaining confidence along the way.

A friend of mine at Rocky Mountain University in Utah did this new internship called the CEN. I googled it...here's a link: http://www.evidenceinmotion.com/educational-offerings/eim-internship/

They really enjoyed it because it had a curriculum you followed during the internship and the instructors were all board certified and part of this national network. I think other PT programs are involved as well. My affiliations are all setup, but I am going to talk to my teacher and see if this is possible. Interesting idea for the future...
