First year tail coverage

Where I am, not FL, tail costs about the same as 2 years of coverage.

the typical cost is 150-250% of your most recent annual premium for the same level of coverage.

Generally 2.5 x premiums in Florida. If first year premium was $5000 claims made.

Tail would be around $12500 give or take.

Second year premium for claims made is $7000. Than tail second year is around $17000

After five years. Claims made would be about $15000. Tail would be $35000 tail.
My friends tail after 5 years was over $34000.

Personally I pay occurrence. Between $13000-18000 a year for the 6 years I carried it.

The numbers are the same occurrence vs claims plus tail when you work it out.

The malpractice tail question comes up every 6 months or so.

But new anesthesia residents and soon to be new attending need to calculate the potential tail cost into their overall salary package.

Usually if you work for the government (VA system) or various state institutions or university teaching hospitals you will not be responsible for any tail coverage. And unless you work for a big AMC like Sheridan or Mednax (both of whom are self insured). The tail can run between 10-40K.

Don't be afraid to ask groups or smaller AMCs about tail Calculate this into your potential salary package and how much it would cost you to leave in 1-3 years should you leave.
