Hey sdn,

So I have the classic quandary:
*job offer: non-vet, better paying 9-5 copywriting job 1/2 hour away vs

*probable job offer: working with tropical fish for an international fish importer, 1 hour away from home. I'm going to the warehouse in a few days to check it out, but I think I'd be in the warehouse caring for or shipping/receiving the fish. I doubt there are any DVMs/PhDs.

I'm still on the fence as to which option to go for.

Quandary aside, working with fish seems like something I'd like, but I really can't imagine what fish farm/lake management/pet fish veterinarians are like.

Is anyone interested in fisheries? Pros/Cons?

You're about to go into massive debt for vet school. Personally, I'd take the higher pay and the shorter commute.

i'd take the job you got offered first. if you end up getting offered the copyright job or whatever it was called, i would take it and you can always quit if you get offered the fish job too. even if the copyright job is better pay and closer, that doesn't mean crap if you hate what you're doing. if you think you would enjoy the fish job more, then take that one instead, even if it's a lower pay.

Whatever money you'd make doing this job isn't going to make a dent in your overall debt - take that out of the equation (unless you're talking about working there for a few years). Especially if you're going to have to be using this money anyway for living expenses. So the different of a couple more or less dollars per hour is pretty negligible.

I would wait until you visit the warehouse to make a decision. It does seem pretty interesting - almost like feedlot work but with fishies.

Personally, I'd take the job that I think I would enjoy more as long as it works with your schedule, you don't mind the commute, ect.

Working with fish sounds SO COOL by the way!

AVC is one of only a couple of vet schools in North America that has a program for aquaculture. I'm not sure what the others are. I don't really know a lot of information on it. If I wasn't a veggie and didn't think that fisheries are ruining the planet, I think I'd really like being a fish vet. I'm fascinated by them. I'm taking ichthyology next semester. I was thinking of switching the neurobiology because it might be more relevant to vet school, but fish are just too darn cool.
