what is the pathophysiology of fistulas that occur in cancer? via invasion of adjacent organs? how does radiation increase its incidence...i cant seem to find info on the pathophys of this....any help would be appreciated

I'm no expert by far, but I think it's from tissue invasion followed by perforation, drainage of lumenal contents (depending on the organ), and adhesions that will make the pathway for the fistula.

This, especially in the GIT, will cause fistulas to form from the perforation to the adjacent tissue and weakenned wall due to the cancer. With cancer, chemo will cause increased adhesion formation in the GIT. I don't remember why.

I would look up Colon cancer, adhesion, chemo, things like that.

Read up on Crohn's. The pathophys is probably very similar.
