Looking through the threads, it seems that many are applying to UCF's new program. I just want to get a feel for who is applying to FIU CoM, and seriously considering them. And for those who are Florida residents and not applying, what are you reasons? (asking in a nice way, trying to see if I overlooked something) Thanks.

i went to undergrad there. i LOVED it.
id give anything to have a great MCAT and FL residency to get into their program. I have a lot of good DO schools that I might get into though...so its not bothering me too much.
id most likely have to retake the MCAT and move to FL to stand a shot.

I am a florida resident and 3 cred from being a University of Miami graduate. I love FIU (Wish I would have gone there instead and saved a lot of money). It's a great school and I would definitely go there if given the opportunity. Don't know how new schools look upon applicants with lower stats tho.

that is EXACTLY what i ended up doing!
i was accepted into UM from california as a transfer student...then i freaked cause of the tuition.
i almost left miami altogether but a friend convinced me to stay after they showed me FIU. It REALLY helped that they were ranked as the second best school for out of state tuition in like 2003 or whatever year it was. they remain high on that list to this day.
but who knows what could happen with this entering class...i HOPE my Panther Pride shines through on my application!

Yeah financially and academically FIU is really great. Now if we can just get that football team together...

haha...yeah but the real futbol team is outstanding!!!
i worked out with one of the guys who got drafted by DC United and later become an MLS All-Star! I have his FIU jersey too!!!
anyhow, did you get the FIU secondary yet???

nope not yet. I actually am getting ready to submit my application in a few minutes. I was waiting on a transcript. Did you get the secondary? How long did it take you to get verified?

im not verified!
I think they send out the email to everyone. There is a qualifier in the email though...it states if you dont score at least a 25 total and a have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, then you cannot fill out the secondary.
but i think lots of people will make that cutoff.

If you already got the link for the secondary, go for it! the sooner the better. I already filled out the secondary, now waiting for my LORs to arrive.

I'm almost done with the secondary, do I send my letters at the same time or wait for them to ask.

Submit the secondary first, give it about a day, then send in the LORs. This way, you'll give the office of ad. enough time to receive your secondary app before the letters arrive. If the letters make it before your secondary app, they *might* toss them (dont want that).

submitted secondary about 3 days ago but i'm not verified yet. Emailing them to ask if I should wait for verification or send letters.

Good luck matt. I submitted weeks ago but my aacomas wasn't verified until last week. Do they send out LOR's as soon as you're verified? I already emailed FIU to see if they got my letters but no response.

I would suggest calling in and asking someone whether or not they received your letters. That's what I did and they were able to check for me within a couple of minutes.

PS- I received an interview invite last week 🙂 almost fell off my chair. (I've been verified for awhile though)

Good idea, I'll do that in the morning. Good job on the interview invite.

Congrats on the invite! Have you chosen your date yet?

And yes, I am a FL resident. From my understanding, FIU CoM is looking for individuals that are most willing to stay and practice in south FL to address the local shortage of physicians. Even though you are a CA resident, I would think that if you were to sufficiently stress how much you wanted to practice in south FL after completing your residency, that would greatly help your cause.

It's weird I emailed FIU and they emailed me back saying they only got one of my six letters from AMCAS. AMCAS says they sent all of them. But I guess instead of sending them as a packet they send them individually, so I have to wait forever to be complete at FIU.

From my understanding, once AMCAS verifies any of your letters, they make them available for participating schools to download.

So I'm thinking:

A) Either the AMCAS letter service is glitching again (it is a pilot after all) and you should have your letters resent (pref via VirtualEval) to AMCAS.

or B) The letters are ready to go and FIU needs to download them.

In any case, I'm not much of a benchwarmer and recommend calling all parties involved on Monday to figure out what the deal really is (I think you get more answers over the phone).

Hope this helps,
Miguel

hey guys, i just interviewed at FIU...and I have NOTHING BUT GOOD THINGS to say!
their program is going to be AMAZING and it really looks like the first class is going to get super pampered 😀

Here's hoping for an acceptance
:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

If you really want to know, the tuition seems really high (IMHO) and they don't seem to give the same financial support as UCF. I might be interested in primary care but I'm not looking for a school with a primary care focus. Also, I'm not sure I'd want to stay in South Florida.

Maybe the post isn't appropriate at this point, but you asked, I answered.

The tuition in state is 21k and oos is 49k. For in state is that really high? It's the cheapest of the schools I applied to but I haven't looked up how much the average school costs.

Information from the 2008-2009 MSAR is as follows:

In-State Tuition for Public Schools
Range: $9,081 - $34,246
Median: $23,065
Average: $22,114

-Private school tuition levels seemed to be in line with Out of State numbers for public schools (with prices around $41K)

patient waiting ensues.
letter of intent has be signed, sealed and delivered (electronically that is...so that was just a figure of speech).
*deep breath as I await my decision*

Does anyone know or have a rough idea of how large the waitlist is? I'm really frustrated because I have been waiting forever to hear from them. I just found out I'm on the waitlist .. and can't understand the rationale for being so secretive with the amount of people on it! Can anyone help here?

According to this post (in the FIU secondary thread in pre-allopathic), the size of the waitlist is approximately 150 persons. I would try to verify this source, but only cuz its nice to have things verified before you believe them 😉

EDIT: I think you might have seen that post though...cuz I just saw your question posed at the end of that thread.

I understand your frustration I am in the same boat. As are many of us. Just relax though they are a new school (I'm sure you've heard that a couple times now) but the admissions department is working hard. Just to assure you, I called Dr. Roller, Associate Dean of Admissions and to dispel any rumors you have heard 150 is for sure not the case, I asked her myself. I don't know where the previous source got his or her information from but please if you post something like that be aware of the heart attacks you can produce.

Again just be patient and hope for the best. Listen if I don't get into FIU Ill be going to Sackler in Israel which is crazy to me ... but I gotta move on with my life. I would give anything to go to FIU but we'll see what happens. Best of luck to all of you in this position.
