Hi guys!

Can somebody (or anyone who is knowledgeable enough) who has been in the position of deciding between FIU and Howard give an objective comparison between these two schools? I might find myself in the position to choose one or the other in the future. I honestly like both schools. So far, I have:

Howard (pros)

-Been around for much longer
-Impressive match list
-Supportive student body
-Have their own hospital
-D.C is a great city
-Focus on underserved

FIU (pros)
-Cheaper since I am in state + family here
-It's in Miami, I'm also from Miami

Howard(cons)
-A bit more pricey

FIU (cons)
-Relatively new
-Does not have a hospital of their own (only affiliated hospitals spread all over Miami)

Thanks for your input!

I'm a Florida resident myself, and I think FIU is a great school choose. It's arguably the best place to attend med school (after UM maybe).

I interviewed at both, I thought these two schools were really close in my mind. Howard is more established and being in D.C. is awesome! Howard also has the brand new library which is super nice and a lot of history with the school. Neither school is P/F so nothing there. FIU does have the Neighborhood Help Program right? So FIU does have a focus on the underserved as well. FIU's campus is beautiful and sometimes you'll forget that you're not in undergrad haha. Both schools seem open to the students needs, but FIU will be more likely to do something as a relatively new school. If the only reason you would go to FIU is for comfort/familiarity of being in Miami, I would tell you to go to Howard. Honestly sometimes you need to live somewhere else for a while.

UM is hard to beat.

Which one did you choose and why? If I have to guess from your username, you must also be from Miami lol. In the end, I think it usually always comes down to price. I don't care much about the whole "living in another city" thing, I think it would be a bad idea to choose a medical school for that reason alone. I'm more interested in the programs (like clinicals and residency match record) and quality of life during the 4 years. I wouldn't say familiarity would be the reason I would choose FIU but comfort translates to convenience which makes life easier during the 4 years in medical school so in that regard I think it's reasonable to take it into account when choosing a school, but there are definitely other factors to consider.

Soooo I'm not going to either school haha, but Howard finished a place higher on my list than FIU ultimately because I wanted to leave Miami, but that may not be the case for you haha.
