Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone here has used one of those programs to help make and sort your flashcards for class. I was thinking of getting this one: http://www.flashmybrain.com/index.php because someone in my class uses it and likes it, but it would be great to find a good program that was free (me being a poor vet student and all 🙂). I like the feature where the program actually quizzes you using games and such, might be cool and a good way to break up the monotony of parasitology haha.

Advice?

I've used flashcard exchange as well as some random free flashcard app on my ipod touch.

On a related note, there are some really good veterinary anatomy flashcards that just came out if anyone is looking for some more anatomy study help.

I use FlashCardExchange.com

It has some limitations and things I wish they did better, but they're constantly improving it so who knows, maybe they'll fix my pet peeves down the road.

I've tried several things over the years, such as OneNote etc but they are all more work than they're worth. I find good old-fashioned A5 card and coloured pencils are far better than flash gizmos. Cheaper, too! 😀

Even then, I find the best thing is repeatedly doing past papers.

Oh man, I have to disagree on Microsoft OneNote! It could be because I have a tablet, but I LOVE OneNote - it keeps everything organized, autosaves, and so forth. It's also pretty intuitive to use. I can see where just doing things on paper would be easier if I had a different computer, though.

Yeah, I just had a laptop and a handwriting slate thing, but it couldn't recognise my handwriting. And typing was plain FAIL. So I gave up and went back to this paper stuff 😉 I've a mate in my class who swears by it though, so horses for courses I guess.

They're called "Saunders Veterinary Anatomy Flash Cards." I think they are made by Elsevier - you can find them on Amazon for a little more than $35.

I recently downloaded "iflipr" for my Itouch. It's pretty cool - You can make (or use other peoples) flash cards, and use and store them all on your Ipod or Iphone.

What really sold me on it, is you can make them (the cards) in excel (Colum 1 vs. Column 2) and easily import them into the app.

When you are using them, there is a "Check" or an "X" - and it uses an algorithm (Leitner or something) that recycles the wrong cards more often the the correct ones. In other words, if you knew the awnser, you hit the Check, you got it wrong, you hit the X, and the X's come around more often. You can do them in order, or set up a random, or combine both with the leitner algorithm.

Again, I love it - as I don't really learn anything for 'making' the flash cards (but others claim they learn better by writing them out - for me, that was a huge waste of time).

There are other apps like iflipr, such as StudyAid and a few others, but right now, i like flipr better.

If you have a tablet you can download the microsoft experience pack for the tablet. Its nice cause you can write on them just like making your own or type them if you want.

I recently purchased an iPod Touch and got the app Flashcards Deluxe by orangeorapple.com for it and I really like it.

You type out your flashcards into excel, upload via orangeorapple.com and using a personalized code you create, download them onto your iPod Touch or iPhone. Very fast and easy.

Features (from the website)

  • Two smart study modes that automatically focus more on the cards you miss: Leitner and a more advanced Spaced Repetition mode (similar to SuperMemo)
  • Built in searchable "dictionary" of your cards that allows you to easily look up other terms as you study
  • Divide cards into categories
  • 3-sided cards
  • Include pictures and sounds from either your computer or iPhone/iTouch. Zoom into pictures.
  • Clean, efficient user interface, including full-screen viewing
  • Custom text and background colors
  • Browse-mode that lets you easily navigate forward or back without keeping score
  • Slideshow mode
  • 3 response levels: Wrong, I kind of know, I know really well (vs the standard correct/wrong) - for more efficient studying
  • Customizable input commands and icons
  • Large number of cards (5000+) to be imported easily
  • Backup your flashcards to your computer
  • Very easy to get started, with lots of features and options for advanced users
  • Great support! I promptly respond to any questions or feedback you may have.
I really like it. 🙂

Hey all!

I just wanted to update this thread with my progress thus far 🙂 I decided to go with flashmybrain.com and totally love it. I can use the online version OR the offline version on my computer. I have made tons of cards, and so far the program is really simple to use. I like that I can upload meadia to the cards also...which makes studying for histology easy (becaues I can easily make cards out of the photos we get from our course CD).

Also, you can have the program dump your cards into several games, which definately breaks up the monotony. It will go through the stack with you and, based on your answers, repeat cards you have trouble with automatically. Very cool.

Probably the best part is that I can share all my cards with fellow classmates (and vice versa)...which is fantastic. I can print them out if I want, or I can just load them onto my phone and take them with me (I have a Palm Pre...but if you can view photos on your phone you can use this program). FABULOUS. Makes Bacteriology a breeze! Well, not really, but it definately beats stacks and stacks of cards everywhere!

👍

Never heard of that. Might look into it when I get more money ($30 is more than is even in my bank account at the moment 🙁 lol).

By the way just noticing your name and avatar. You ride a CBR or does it mean something else?

Yeah $30 was a bit much IMO, but the rewards have paid off so I don't mind the cost now...a good one time investment I'd say 👍

And yes, CBR as in I have and love a 600RR 🙂

has anyone used Recallplus? I am very visual, and it looks interesting, but a bit $$
