Flashcard software

So... my weak point has always been memorizing stuff, and it apparently still is! This is why I wasn't a bio major in college!

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody has tried using flashcard software before. I tend to do pretty well with actual flashcards, but as I am learning with my online summer class (histology) it is totally impractical to try and make cards for everything, plus including images would be nice.

Not only am I interested because of my current situation (let's just say I need a 98% on the final to get the A that I wanted/needed), but I was wondering about when (and I do mean WHEN, not IF!) I get to vet school too. My hope is that eventually things will feel less like memorizing and more like understanding, but realistically I expect there is a lot of info I will just need to know.

So if you have tried flashcard software, what did you think? And what program did you use?

Or alternatively, any suggestions for learning massive quantities of information? I believe I am a very visual learner if that helps narrow down suggestions.

I have never used flashcard software, or flashcards in general, for studying, so I can't help you there.

But as a visual learner myself, what works well for me is drawing pictures. What I do is become familiar enough with whatever system/structure I'm studying so that I can then reproduce it on my own and label the pertinent parts. Then, during an exam, I literally can use my mind's eye to look at the structures to answer questions.

and it works pretty well. I THOUGHT I heard someone say that MS ONENOTE has a flashcard section, but Im not sure of that.

Our K-State tablets came packaged with it... MS OneNote and "Microsoft Experience Pack for Windows", "Ink Flash Cards".

I've used the program and it's okay. Keyword OK and not great. You can't print any of them, which I hate.

You -can- copy/paste into it, including images (though it makes a big file size, more difficult to share via email with fellow students).

I noticed that, personally, it didn't do much to help me.. I think real life actual index cards did more for me. But we're all different with different styles of learning...

I just downloaded a couple different programs to try... they all have free trials for a few weeks, so I figure I can play around with them a bit and if I like one and think it will be useful, then I can buy it. I'll report back if anyone cares!

I was hoping to find one that would work with my palm pilot... found a really nice looking one for the mac that works with the palm, but couldn't find a PC/palm version. I'm betting there is a program that works with the iPhone... maybe this will be the last reason I need to take the iPhone plunge...

Interesting that programs come bundled with some of your computers... and I like the idea of sharing cards with classmates. Although I think part of the learning is in the actual making of the cards, so who knows. I really need to figure out some good study techniques before I get to vet school!

Here is a cool flashcard sharing website. It has a bunch of learning and testing methods and some games. The site also allows you to print/export flashcards.

I have used www.flashcardexchange.com for the past 4 years, you can upload lists to form the flashcards, you can print lists and flashcards, and I use them on my iphone. I don't know about palm pilots.

I also use imindmap (though it is a large program), which really works for my visual memory.

As for memorization, I use a lot of mnemonic techniques. If I am using flash cards I include the mnemonic in the hint part of flashcardexchange.

I also make 'concept cards' which are flash cards with greater information. So, a term or phrase on one side, with a list or such on the other side.

I also use backchaining for memorization of anything that must go in order. Backchaining is memorizing the last significant piece first, then the next to last, etc, in chunks of 3-5 bits of information, with overlap between the chunks.

I also did end up finding http://www.mapletop.com/supermemo/screens.html for PC/palm. By some miracle I managed to download and install it, but it is pretty "rustic" getting the info for the cards into the palm. It was giving me fits.

Moral of the story, for my final exam in 2 weeks I am still making good old fashioned paper cards!
