When does Flight Surgery training take place, and how does it affect your payback time in a straight through training system like the Army? I realize everyone's banking on the Navy not actually eliminating the GMOs, but I'm curious how it would work if they did.

For the GMO flight surgeons, flight surgery training starts within 6 months of the end of internship (the larger classes start in July and September.) If you start in September, you generally get stashed at the sick call clinic during the gap. You can also take leave and do the alcohol abuse awareness course (if they still require that anymore) and other short courses you might want to get out of the way. I suppose you could request preceptor time in a specialty of your interest if something like that is available where you are interned.

As flight surgery school is not residency time, it counts as payback time.

It's only a 6 wk army (gentleman's) course at Ft Rucker, AL. It counts towards your ADSO.
