Several of us including myself have written about the overall Florida market before, I’d recommend searching for them.
An oversimplification of the history in Florida is that it was a hot-bed of malicious, multi-tiered and aggressive PPs who worked new grads into the ground. These groups made a ton of money but sold very early to Sheridan/Envision/Team Health/whatever monniker they use - particularly in the Tampa/St. Pete area where the job market has been abysmal (most starting offers < 200K with 60+ hour work weeks when I was in the state). It’s unfortunate because I would have strongly considered settling down in the area. My friends in other fields tell me it is just as bad if not worse for them as well so overall the market just sucks there (probably because it’s so desirable). What was once Gulf-To-Bay Anesthesia was one of the few true PPs that offered CCM opportunities. I have heard nothing positive about what that group has become in the last decade.
By contrast Orlando has a great history and the old JLR group (now USAP) was a gem down there. I have several friends in that group and they are all very satisfied. The caveat is they are alll sub specialists and agree the buy-in years were positively brutal. Not sure what it’s like for generalists.
I don’t know much about the Jacksonville area, specifically.
In Gainesville, UF is always hiring but by academic-standards pays dreadfully. Some AMC is at North Florida RMC (and they are starting a residency affiliated with Ocala out of there?), from what I understand people are happy there but the people I know there are UF expatriates and didn’t want to leave the area so didn’t have a ton of choice (and again are sub specialists).
As far as areas south of Orlando, the best practices very rarely advertise and fill by word of mouth. There are some great ones but the large ones on gasworks were awful, also offering less than 200 to start.
To summarize - being a sub specialist helps. USAP in Orlando is definitely worth a look. Stay away from Tampa/St Pete (and anything Sheridan/Envision) unless you must live there. Hopefully you have a strong alumni network you can lean on.
The overall salaries probably aren’t up to the SDN MGMA 75th percentile standard but lack of state tax and (in general outside of very South Fl) lower cost of living makes that shake out a bit.
