I know getting into state schools OOS is ridiculous, and I've heard it's really bad with Florida schools. Now, I grew up in Gainesville while my mom AND dad were both getting their degrees from UF so orange and blue runs in my blood. We moved up north when I was older so I can no longer claim FL residency 😡. I chose NYU over UF for undergrad because I wasn't sure if I wanted to go into arts or medicine and NYU's dance program is awesome. But now that I made up my mind, I wanna go back home. My dad suggested I go for my Masters at UF so that I could claim residency, but my question is will that even count? I have a feeling they require 5+ years or soemthing like that, and also, exactly HOW impossible is it for an OOS to get in?

Miami, UF, and USF all accept non-residents (although very few). FSU is the only one who doesn't. I do remember on the UF secondary there being a question for non-Florida residents to explain their association with Florida. And I believe that it's 12 months to extablish residency in the state.

From what I know, the Master's won't establish residency for you because you're not really there to live, you're there to go to school. For some reason they excludes you from being a resident. You should contact them directly and see what they say -- you may be able to explain your association in the secondary and still have a chance at admissions (although not for tuition purposes I'm sure).

Correct. I just finished my UF secondary application and need to do the online residency part tonight.

If you are dependent on your parents, they need to have proven residency for 12+ months in FL. They can prove it by voters registration dates, FL drivers license, FL car registration, FL address. If you're independent, you'll need to prove this, too. If you live in Florida only to go to school and were out of state originally, they won't consider you in-state. You really need to be here for other purposes (i.e. full time job). I think the 12 month rule is from the day you start classes in med school so if you start in August 2008, start living here by July 2007.

Btw, I graduated from UF this past May. Go Gators. 🙂

I also used to live in Florida and would love to go back for med school. Now, my family still owns property there, so I was wondering if there is any way that could get me in-state residency? If anyone knows, please let me know!

Yup I know about FSU. Good thing I hate the 'noles!

Ok, even though you hate the noles and I'm DEFINITELY A NOLE turned CANE for med school...I'll still post.

I have a freind who is an Alabama resident that did her undergrad at FSU (Go noles!)...then went to dental school at UF AND was able to claim FL residency because of her undergrad work at FSU and never held a job in the state of FL either, she was ONLY here for school. So I know someone posted above that it doesn't work if you're only going to school in FL...but there is somehow that you can do it (assuming you're not dependant on your parents).

For residency-you need rent receipts for 12 months, FL's driver's liscence (not hard to obtain), register to vote in FL (not hard to do), register your car in FL (not hard to do), and file your taxes in FL (also not hard to do).

Anyways, UMiami accepts a good number of OOS students, though UF and USF are significantly more difficult to get into if you are OOS since they are public schools.

Yeah, thats what I have heard as well. I think Florida is the easiest state in the country to get residency. I have a friend who now goes to law school as an in-state student due to being an undergrad at UF.

What about for people who were raised in Florida but who have since expatriated....?😳

That's basically me🙂 . I emailed their adcoms and they basically said that if you do a masters (or undergrad) you can claim residency after 12 months FOR ADMISSION BUT NOT TUITION. For tuition purposes, its the whole full-time job, drivers liscence thing. UF also has a section on the application where you are asked for your ties to the state, so even if you dont claim residency, if you are simply displaced, you might have a slight advantage.

Out of curiousity would you still consider UF if you got in but had to pay OOS tuition rates??? Just curious what your take is on this cuz I saw how expensive it was for USF OOS people vs. in state and can only imagine UF to be equal or worse.

Probably. It wouldn't be too much more than private schools I imagine, and you can't put a price on true love 🙂

Agreed. I was just curious on your take on that because for some people that plays a big role in where they go. I personally think Florida is one of the greatest places to get medical education, but I'm biased because I've been in Fl. since I was two.

OH you're from Tampa, eh? My brother was born in St. Petersburg Hospital over 3 months premature and he left their "miracle baby". I'd love to end up there..it's where my passion for medicine started.

I love that general area but I don't know much about it because I was only there for a few months. I can find anything in Gainesville blindfolded though!

Hmm...do you know where Oxford Manor is? What about Satchel's?

Oxford is that really nice complex right? When I was young we lived in CLO. I wish we woulda lived in Oxford! I can't remember what Satchel's is, its been a billion years. I need to go back.

Oh wow, the CLO? That place was quite the talk last year when I was living in Gainesville at the time. The building was in really bad shape. Something about fire hazards, exposed electrical wires, bad appliances, etc. UF told the people to move out even though they had contracts to live there longer. They went to court and the court said UF wasn't the actual owner of it or the land. They were just to overlook the place. Money was given and some repairs done. I'm not sure if it's still there. They were looking to demolish the place.

Btw, they knocked down that shopping plaza on the corner of Univ and 13th. The one with the Maui Teriyaki. It's all gone to make way for $1mm+ condos. Who has a million dollars? I have no idea.

Oxford is on Archer road if it's the one you're talking about. It's a nice quiet place, but there are a lot of brand new complexs now. Gatorwood Apartments was closed down and I think the buildings are gone now.

Satchel's is this pizza place on NW23rd near the airport. Maybe they weren't open when you lived there.

Yeahhh the CLO was a $hithole back when we lived there too, but that's what you get when both your parents are students. Umm have you ever been to that bar, Sister Hazel? I don't know if it's still around but my dad talked about it and how the band is named after that place. (obviously I've never been there since we moved out of there when I was like 13 but my dad keeps talking about it.)

Did they happen to explain how exactly that would work? From my understanding, residency has state legislated requirements/conditions, which can be found here: http://www.collegeboard.com/about/association/international/pdf/sr_FL01.pdf This link doesn't seperate residency requirements for admissions/tuition, which leads to my next question...

Do you mind saying what school it was you spoke with? If they do in fact split residency status for admissions and tuition purposes, I would think that must be school specific, and would probably benefit some on here to know it.

I'm not sure. When was the last time you were in Gainesville?

Jash, here's the part of the residency form I'm filling out on UF's application website (for all UF applicants regardless of undergrad, grad, professional school).

Section 4. Residency
A Florida resident for tuition purposes is a person who has, or a dependent person whose parent or legal guardian has, established and maintained legal residency in Florida for at least twelve months.

Residence in Florida must be a bona fide domicile rather than maintaining a residence while you are attending the university.

To qualify as a Florida resident for tuition purposes, you must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident alien or legal alien granted indefinite stay by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Other persons not meeting the twelve-month legal residence requirement may be classified as Florida residents for tuition purposes IF they fall within one of the limited special categories authorized by the Florida Legislature and the Florida Board of Education.

All other persons are ineligible for classification as Florida residents for tuition purposes. Living in or attending school in Florida will not, in itself, establish legal residence.

Students who depend on out-of-state parents for support are presumed to be legal residents of the same state as their parents.

With very few exceptions, applicants younger than 24 years of age will need a parent or guardian to complete and sign the residency affidavit. To establish Florida residency, they must provide proof of Florida driver's license, vehicle registration and voter registration.

I am a Florida resident.

I am not a Florida resident.

The last two lines are buttons to press on the page. Hope this helps. Here's the following page for Florida Residents:

According to section (D)

(D) I am married to a person who has maintained legal residence in Florida for at least 12 months. I now have established legal residence and intend to make Florida my permanent home. (Required: Copy of marriage certificate, claimant's voter registration, driver's license and vehicle registration.)

You could always marry a FL resident. lol

What cycle do you want to apply? Fall 2008? You can move to Florida for a job.

I guess I'm not fast enough on the edit. Re-read the post. 🙂

Either that or I'm too fast. Comp Sci Labs with internet acess are awesome.

I'd like to start med school without a lag year (Fall 09) or with a masters degree year or two in the middle (I'd like to up my GPA anyways). I definitely want to be in school constantly until I graduate med school.

It seems like it will be difficult for you to get FL residency under those circumstances. You pretty much have 1-2 years so START residency in Florida so I'm sure you will find something within in that time to find a way. Good luck and Go Gators. 🙂

A master's degree will help your application very little. I'd think about what you want to do with your life in the next year and do it. That could be more studying, research, working, travelling, volunteering, finding a FL sugar daddy, etc. 😛

cool. I was raised in Bradenton and Anna Maria Island just to the south.

I'm from Bradenton originally too, but not close to Anna Maria Island. More closer to the bradenton/sarasota barrier.

I hated it with a passion.

Yeah i can remember wanting to go anywhere as soon as i could. But for me the older i get the more I appreciate that slower easygoing place with smell of salt and the sunsets over the gulf while eating a blackened grouper sandwich with my grandparents.

I know!

Now that I live in Indiana, I miss it a lot...especially during the winter!

I don't mind going there for the beaches. But I'd rather be in Tampa and just visit there, because I like the fact that there are more of my indian cultural things up here from more temples to dance schools for indian dance and more indian restaurants and boutiques etc.

I'd rather go to clearwater which has the beaches but all the things tampa has that bradenton doesn't.

I kinda like St. Pete as well.

Don't know that I'd want to live in Indiana but not sure I'd want to live in Bradenton either.

Manatee High School. Class of 1992. You know back when Paula Abdul still had a music career...yeah...😳

Ha! Our RIVAL SCHOOL!!!!! I went to Southeast high but wayyyyyy later like grad. 2005. My brouther graduated 1996 and other brother grad. 1999 from Southeast!!! Go Noles!!!!! Not FSU noles btw!!!! Bwahahahahahaha

The funny thing was our highschool had Gator colors and noles as our icon. Now they have 2 new highschools there. Lakewood ranch and Braden River Highschool. How the times change.

Hey i hear you. I've lived in San francisco for about 10 years. I hated the lack of diversity there. But its just some things I miss..like sailing my hobicat or swimming in 80 degree water...that type of thing.

My family now owns a condo in Madeira Beach (it's between Treasure Island and Redington Beach, in case you don't know) and I like visiting there and being close to St. Pete and Tampa...definitely more stuff to do! I agree that Tampa has a lot more cultural things than Bradenton, and that's definitely appealing to me, as well.

He posts in the random peripherally related to the MCAT thread in the MCAT forum which is nothing more then a mini chat group between a bunch of us who have become online friends. Some of the posters on that thread have met in real life too and chat outside of the thread. But its basically like a mini lounge forum inside of the MCAT forum.

Guju, you graduated high school in 2005 and already taken the MCAT soon after that??? You're in an SMP a little over a year later? 😕 AWESOME!

I know someone from Manatee County...

I love that this thread has turned into a big ol' reunion.

Too bad I went to prissy private school for the one year I was in the Tampa area

I had friends at Manatee High School and at St. Stephen's, but I moved before I enrolled (I would've gone to MHS).

Ohh ok. Yeah we had started the first IB program at our highschool otherwise a lot of people I knew would have been in one of the aforementioned schools quote above.
