Hello I currently live in NH and am a senior in college, and am a legal resident of that state as I have lived with my mother for the duration of my life. My father, however, lives in Florida and has lived there for some time, and we are fairly close. I guess my question is how do I go about acquiring status as a Florida Resident for tuition purposes, and for application purposes? Florida is my #1 choice for many of my schools, and unfortunately living in NH does little for me as far as school.

I am applying this summer after I retake my MCAT's, and any information anyone could provide would be very helpful.

Would I need to legally live there for a year or more, or is the fact that my father lives there enough for me to declare residency.

You need voter registration in the state and/or a drivers licence you have held for two years to have residency in this state. You need two forms of proof to show residency.

Does your father claim you as a dependant (or is he willing to)?

He doesn't claim me as a dependent, but I do believe he would be willing to. Despite the distance we have a close relationship.

I know for a fact that if you come from out of state you cannot gain in-state tuition for any of the years you are in school. I don't know if your father living there will have any effect on this or not. I'd say your best bet is to a call a school and ask.

You have to double check with each school you apply to. In many states, residency for tuition purposes is dictated by each school and not by whether you are considered a "resident" of the state. In some places, it is nearly impossible and in other places (like UMDNJ) it is ridiculously easy to get instate tuition.

If you get a license, talk to your dad about claiming you as a dependent and get voter registration then you MIGHT be able to pull it off. We have a few people in my class that didn't live in Florida for too long but somehow worked the system to get instate.

The bigger issue is that many Florida schools up the requirements quite a bit for OOS students. Even Miami does and they are private.

Thank you all. I will call the schools once I start getting near the deadline, and most likely will move to Florida this year during my year off and establish all the needed credentials at that time. I guess step one is acing that MCAT the second time around :scared:

You may have to be there a year before applying (not matriculating) to establish residency for admission purposes.
