Now that matriculation has happened, it is time to make a new florida thread.

What the heck is going on with USF? I submitted all of my application stuff a long while ago and they haven't processed me. I go to my application and it says "it hasn't been processed." I sent them an email last week and they haven't responded. I just e-mailed them again hoping I get an answer.

Anyone actually complete at USF?

I am already complete at UM and almost complete at UF (only need my peer letter which is being sent).

Title typos rock.

Especially after they're fixed.

I'm not sure what's going on with USF either. Under Application Preference it reads "not entered". What the heck does this mean? I've already completed all of the other schools' apps. Now the waiting game begins.

USF has an online status check? 😕
I finally got word from UF that my app is complete (it took a month for my friend to send a peer rec 🙄). Havent heard from the others.

If you go back to your logon page for your application and login, you will see your application. Click on the link and it will say whether it has been processed or not.

thanks! wow, I need to pay more attention to my FL apps

There's a lot going on at USF; first day of med school, new facilities, new admissions director, etc. Granted, it's no excuse for not staying on top of applicant issues. I think their admission season really kicks into gear around mid to late September. I'm dying to hear from them soon.

Yeah I figured with the change of head, they may be a little disorganization in the office. Its too bad I won't be able to meet REL Larkin. 🙁

so florida schools don't really like OOSer's huh?? What if I have some connections.. think it may help? I applied to U Miami.

Miami is private, so they're pretty friendly to OOSers. In fact, on their med school website I think it lists increasing OOS enrollment under the "changes for 2008 season" tab. As for USF, they accept maybe 3 or so from OOS. FSU currently only accepts in state residents. UF also has known to be pretty kind to OOSers as well.

I just received an interview to UFL. I am an oos applicant. So there is hope. 🙂

I've met a couple of out-of staters here at USF, so it is possible to get in. They way they discourage OOS is to have a really high tuition for the first year until you become an official resident so you are looking at $50k for the first year OOS vs. $20k for the first year in-state.

LifetimeDoc, how has POM been going?

just got an uf interview. in-state student. my date is late feb. they must have started giving them out early for me to be bumped until next year.

I lied. my interview is in late sept. miscommunication with their office.

I think that the delays your experiencing with USF come from the fact you aren't applying EDP there. I notice most of the EDP schools have more delay issues because of the need to deal quickly with those applicants and put the rest on hold.

Anyways I got a UF interview yesterday and now I want to hear from UMiami. UF definitely has the nicest admissions people I have seen with FSU coming in a close second.

anyone else complete at USF? I got an email today saying I was 🙂

I also called them and they told me they're mostly working on EDP right now...

Great! We just did our first physical exam today of the heart on some standardized patients and did a TB mask fitting (at least my group did these today). The POM course is a broad overview of many aspects of medicine to get you warmed up for the real medical school coursework that starts on August 28. This is the first year that POM is P/F instead of a graded course, so it is more relaxed than previous years. The second years remind us that POM is not medical school, so don't think medical school is this easy...it's not.

My group is working on aspects of ACL injuries after surgery, so I've got some literature research to do tonight to prepare for our small group sessions and eventual presentation/poster session before our white coat ceremony. We are at school 8am-5pm everyday.

I got a rude awakening from UF after learning that they date your MCAT from the time of matriculation; i.e. If you took the 2005 April mcat it's already considered a little older than 3 years. Some programs date mcats from the time of application like FSU and Miami. I'm not sure about USF's policy. I've checked their entire site and the only thing they state is "the mcat cannot be older than three years". Is that three years from the time of application or matriculation?? Anybody know??

Yeah, I've got a friend Brian who's an MS3 there right now. I think he might be finished with his Ob/Gyn rotation. Anyways, he tells me after POM and the white coat ceremony the real fun begins; he said he typically learns more in 2 weeks in med school than he did during his entire undergrad education. I like how USF integrates their clinical skills training and experience early on in the education. Good luck and Congrats!

Ya, I know what you mean but ohh well!

Sorry, but what exactly is POM?

POM (Professions of Medicine) is the first course you take at USF COM. It's kind of an introductory, welcome to medical school type course that allows you to get better assimilated with your class, med school in general, etc. I also believe you get the first chance to have some clinical contact and start learning clinical skills. USF integrates some clinical knowledge early on in med school. Some other schools like FSU throw you to the lions right when you start with clinical anatomy, phys, etc. Once you get the white coat at USF you start the hard stuff.

How close are you guys writing to the 500 word limit for the FSU secondary questions? I think I only have 250 words for my longest essay. 500 words is quite a bit.

yeah, most of my answers are right at about 250 words. Though my parent traits essay is 400 and the "qualifications" essay is right at 500 words.

Complete at UF! They have been by far the most efficient admissions office of any that I have applied so far. They actually recieve the stuff when they are supposed to!

Anyone have any inkling of when UMiami might be giving out interviews. The first ones last year were on the 8/25. Has anyone heard anything that would point to a change? Thanks.

I wonder if you are talking about the same Brian I know. Check your PMs.

I know FSU has an online status page for applications. I don't think Umiami or USF have one. Regardless, can you find out about your status via email? phone? It'd be nice to start receiving some interview invites. Also, do most schools notify applicants about interviews via email as well as phone? I'll be out of town for about a week or so and would like to at least have some open line of contact. I know they all pretty much contact you via phone for invites, just wondering if most FL schools send out an email as well.

I just wanted to drop by and wish everyone luck applying this cycle to florida schools!!!:luck: Really utilize the help your peers here on sdn as some of them may become your future classmates 😉
Again good luck!!

Umiami used to do it for the longest time. But last year they did away with the idea of online status track pages.

I finally heard something from USF. Got an email today telling me that all my info (amcas, secondaries, etc.) is in and currently under review for an interview invitation. Most of the other schools have already told me this; I guess they're kind of backlogged with Early Decision and what not. Just trying to keep the Florida Thread from the back heap of SDN.

Does FSU COM have a minimum MCAT requirement, and does anyone know when they generally start offering interviews to applicants?

I don't think they have a minimum overall requirement but their average is around 25 or so so it should be close to that. They've let people in with 22 and 23 as their scores in the past.

They however do require that no section be lower then a 5. That's what my roommate found out some time ago.

If you have a decent score, anywhere from 27-30+ you should be okay. Their FAQ page lists a 28.something as their average mcat. One thing I couldn't find on their site was a timeframe for mcat validity. Granted, for most schools your score is only valid until three years from the time of application (some from the time of matriculation:scared:), but I have yet to find such a requirement on their site. I guess issues like this are best resolved with the MSAR. As a side note, I could never understand why a lot of schools reference the age of your mcat from the time of matriculation. I can sort of see their reasoning, but this would mean that if you took the mcat in August of '07, it's already considered a year old; kind of sucky.
I read somewhere that FSU's policy in this reguard is four years from the time of application. I could be wrong. I hope the other FL schools beside UF will start sending out some invites soon. USF, don't fail me now!

... and does anyone know when [FSU] generally start offering interviews to applicants?

I've already tried their 2011 Allopathic thread, and it seems they must be pretty darn busy; which is understandable since they hit the ground running. I would imagine they start like other FL schools in mid-late September until march with most probably falling b/w Oct. and Dec.

I hope you guys at USF are having fun with POM; only a week or so left until the white coat ceremony. Here's to all of you!:hardy:

FSU let people in with less then a 28 last year while rejecting people with 28+ scores. I think it depends on the scenario. In the case of the girl that got in with a 22, she was a nurse for several years and had tons of clinical exposure. In the case of the person who had a 23 and 25 when they got in, they had done lots of work with underserved communities and themselves were a minority in that they were hispanic even though they weren't a true minority by definition which for a latino would be considered mexican or puerto rican.

Believe me, I know what you mean. You think if you do all the right things and accomplish every objective schools set you should be a shoe-in. I've known some really brilliant applicants with amazing stats that have had trouble getting in to some FL schools, and yet I personally know of more than a few people who you would think would have serious trouble actually having multiple acceptances. You just never know. When you come right down to it if the adcom likes you and wants you in, you're in; regardless of whether your stats say one thing or another. I plan on staying in state, so I hope I'll start hearing something soon.

I just got a 32M (11ps 10v 11bs) on my 2nd MCAT, 6 points better than last year. Things have just looked a little brighter in the state of florida and beyond. 😎

I'm sure you will. USF and most other Fl. schools don't start giving interview invites this early. They wait til September. WIth USF, they first square away all the EDP applicants and only after they've interviewed do they start extending interview invites for the rest of the season and regular applicants. Then even if you are one of the first interviewees post EDP people you still have to wait til Oct. 15th to find out whether or not you get in. However all applicants after the Oct 15th date only have to wait 10 days post interview for decisions at USF.

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to say good luck to all of you applying this cycle. If you have any questions about the application process feel free to pm me. I will try to check this thread every now to throw my two cents in. By the way, I am an MS1 at USF COM and a fellow classmate of LTD. Good luck again and try not to stress too much!

Congrats! When I retook the mcat I only went up 3 points. That score should improve your chances. Good luck!
