Hey everyone!

I just wanted to say good luck to all of you applying this cycle. If you have any questions about the application process feel free to pm me. I will try to check this thread every now to throw my two cents in. By the way, I am an MS1 at USF COM and a fellow classmate of LTD. Good luck again and try not to stress too much!

And of Bball25 who also posted in here earlier. 😉 😛

See you at the white coat ceremony though I might not be able to stay for the whole thing due to class next Fri.
I told one of your classmates I'd come for her since her family is not here.

Anyone hear anything from USF lately? I called and they said I was still under review...any interview invites?

I -finally- got the 'file complete' email on Tuesday, so we at least know theyre still chugging along through the apps 🙄

USF EDP interviews are Sept 10th this year. My friend applied EDP and told me that her interview was then. They make decisions the Wednesday of the week after that, so i am assuming that they will start the regular season interviews either the week after EDP decisions. Hence, I'm assuming the Monday of the week of EDP decisions will be when the interview invites start going out.

If not that Monday it will be the Monday of EDP interviews when the interview invites will be given and the first interviews will be the 17th. So either the 17th or 24th would be the first interview dates. I'm not sure which one it is. REL can maybe come on here and reconfirm how things were done last year for you guys. I vaguely recall the 26th as being the first regular interviews either last year or year before so perhaps it is the week of 24th when the first interviews will occur and hence the 17th when the first regular decision invites go out.

I am still waiting for them to complete my application. I sent everything in a while back.

I lied. my interview is in late sept. miscommunication with their office.

That's awesome. When were you complete and how did you hear about the interview. E-mail?

EDP interview day has always been the 2nd Monday in September with the first Regular MD interview day being two weeks later. In the past I always tried to make invitations 3 weeks prior to the week that we wanted an applicant to come. Therefore I would have been making phone contact to offer interviews during the week of Sep 3 for the Sep 24 interview group. Good luck to each of you.

Thank you for the clarification. I knew you'd know the answers. 😀

When will UCF be accredited and have info about its admissions?? That will be very exciting.

I was wondering which Medical School in FL has the lowest standards??
Highest would have to be UF.
I am excited about UCF medical school.

I'd say FSU has the lowest standards. They have the lowest matriculant stats. Not to mention, students have to relocate to "regional campuses" in order to do the 3rd/4th year clinical rotations. But I guess we cant be too hard on them about that, it seems like that actually gives you a solid choice in determining a 'best fit' location (hospitals/clinics/geography).

My friend just started USF medical school.
He likes it so far, I talked to his dad yesterday.
He has 6 hours of science classes a day!

Neither FIU nor UCF are allowed to do any recruiting or posting of requirements until they have received preliminary accreditation from the LCME. Both schools will be visited at the end of 2007 and should hear something in Jan/Feb of 2008. If the LCME response is to grant preliminary accreditation, then that program can immediately begin the business of posting requirements and beginning recruitment. On that schedule, the class to be seated will be August 2009. I know both schools are working hard and are hopeful that February will bring good news.

Yes; good luck to everyone this cycle! It's a long process going through applications, the waiting, the fretting, the excitement when you get an interview, the disappointment when rejection letters come in, and hopefully the first call or letter that you've been accepted. I never really realized how stressful the application process can be while you are in it. Keep up your exercise program...it really helps to focus on living and forget your troubles. There are great things happening at the current and new medical schools in Florida, so it's a great time to be a FL resident!

I disagree with the poster above who says FSU has the lowest standards. Define lowest standards. Don't assume you'll get in somewhere just because their stats are lower.

FSU might have lower averages but they look more for the whole application and take into account whether you've worked with underserved areas, whether you yourself have faced severe adversity through being of a disadvantaged status, etc. They like to increase the minorities in medicine too. If you look at the student profiles, one thing is common, they all have either done a lot of community work with underserved people, or they've been from a less advantaged background.

I also think they are being more picky now with their applicants now that they've gotten a bigger number of applicants and some leeway to be choosey.

USF, well they have an avg of 3.7 and 30 so that should tell you something. They can be highly selective too. UF is definitely the hardest to get into but I don't think the others are "easy" to get into.

I think pak was asking about measurable standards, not ideals.
I wasnt implying that they accept ill-qualified students; obviously, it's hard to get into any of these schools. But a straight-forward look at the FL schools' stats indicates that a person with a low MCAT score and GPA has a better chance of getting into FSU than USF or UF. Like you said yourself, USF is selective, and youre pretty much required to have a solid MCAT score before UF even considers you for an interview. That naturally puts FSU at the bottom of the list.

If we consider school/applicant ideals, I'd probably say UF has the lowest standards. An applicant with amazing stats but no community service or URM status would have little chance at FSU but would certainly still be considered by UF. So I guess 'lowest standard' all depends on where the applicant is coming from 😉

USF is the best of both worlds in my opinion 😀

Yes but my point is that even if FSU has the lowest numerical stats that is only because they are heavy into accepting a lot of people from less advantaged backgrounds. Its not going to be easy. There are too many people who assumed a high GPA and low MCAT would get them an interview at FSU but who got rejected flat out by them.

when you guys say Community Service is that like volunteering at the hospital? Because other then that I don't know any other places where I live. Even the red cross office does not want under 21 students in there office, not to mention the hospital changed there policy to over 21 too. I only have 112 hours as a volunteer. However I did move here when I was 12 and English as a second language was a big problem ( because I did not know any when I first moved here except hey how are you. Not that I would have understood the answer anyway) That could be looked at as hard background right?

How was the white coat ceremony? I remember last year there being a bagpipe procession or something; hope the transition from POM to the nitty-gritty material hasn't been too jarring. My thanks to REL for clearing up the timeline concerns of USF interview invites. Good luck to everyone this season👍

Where do you live exactly that students can't be less then 21 years of age to volunteer in a hospital. More importantly where do you go to school? I'm sure if you are at UF like your little status thing under your username suggests, there's lots of opportunities through the premed organizations, Shands, and other such opportunities.

The transition hasn't been too bad for me because I've taken biochemistry, histology, and genetics in undergrad before (which make up a large part of our molecular medicine course in the first block). From what I understand is that that head-start only lasts about a week or two, LOL! This is our first weekend of true studying as the material is already starting to pile up so it's a good time to review the past several days of material and prepare for the next week. Yeah, there was a bagpipe procession, several speakers including current a current student and past student giving their insights into humanism in medicine (which the ceremony is all about). It was a good ceremony for the students and family to transition into and understand what medicine is supposed to be about: being human yourself and treating your patients as humans as well.

It was boring and followed the same sorta proceedings as a graduation ceremony.

First the bagpipe procession and students coming to take their seats, then a bunch of boring speeches, and then the calling of the names for their books on doctoring and their white coats. Students were called 4 at a time. After that they walked out the same way they came in except that they went from the sides rather then the middle and then there was a one hour reception I didn't go to.

I went to support a friend because she didn't have her family in the area to be there for her but it was rather boring overall. Even she was bored at the thing from what she told me. Again no different then a graduation ceremony. Oh and at some point before leaving I think they had the oath portion. That wasn't too bad. I just didn't like the 20 billion speeches that went on forever.

I could deal with Dr. Specter and Dr. Klasko's speeches but Dr. Francois's speech sounded more like he was lecturing the students and saying everything that was written in the oath but in a more round about long version of it. While his words are important to keep in mind it could have been shorter.

Congrats both of you on the white coat ceremony and now the fun begins! I've got an old high school buddy who is, I think, a 3rd year there at USF and he enjoys it. I wanted to stay in FL so USF was definitely one of my choices. Went to undergrad at FSU so I actually would have liked to stay in town there but like you said earlier, they look at some areas of a person's life that can make it difficult for someone, even with a mcat 30+ to get in.

I had some grade issues in my 1st two years of undergrad so I know that hurt me, but it all worked out in the end.

I'm may just run into some of you at rotations in Tampa in a few years!

I really enjoyed the white coat ceremony. The whole thing does kind of resemble a graduation. It was really quite special to me though since it was rather difficult for me to get in. I felt like my hard work has finally paid off. Over all, it was great! The bag pipe was cool too!

School has been a little more difficult for me then for LTD. I all ready don't know the material after just 3 days of B1 classes. Oh well, that's what this long weekend is for. I haven't got use to studying a lot again either and I don't want to. Unfortunately I have too, I always had to work hard for my grades. I am kind of looking forward to it though and I think it will be fun and interesting. I am also looking for a study group or something to meet and go over material every once in a while (I think this may help too.)

Trust me, the last day had lots of new material I've never seen before and the little bit of a head-start won't last that long. We are in this together, and everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. I fumbled through the physical examinations feeling like a complete idiot, LOL, and the volumes of info ready for us to memorize will be the bane of my existence. Back to studying my notes for next week! 🙂

Muck Fiami

Great Med program though.

But seriously muck fiami.

Yeah I understand your feeling. I remember a guy who used to post on here as psychodoc saying the same thing after he got his whitecoat.

I think the thing that annoyed me was Dr. Francois's speech because it was going on and on for soooo long. I've heard him speak before at AMSA meetings and his previous speeches were better, I think he could have done better with his speech then he did but the student's speech was inspiring because I loved the way she related the stories about her patient and his family. That was awe inspiring. But the exciting part like with graduation is always when the speeches are over and they start going through the names. LOL.

You looked beautiful yesterday. Sorry i couldn't stay, I had class otherwise I would have come and find you afterwards.

Agreed. For the sake of this I'll say UF versus FSU. Two very different schools with very different goals, aside from training competent physicians. It really isn't a fair comparison. Everyone has their own personal preferences as well, I personally do not even want to go to UF. It is just how many of the people rubbed off on me that wanted to go there or do attend there. Does that mean everyone person there is a d!ck? Of course not. FSU has different numbers, but they also focus on an area that is not considered as popular anyway. I aim to practice in a lower population area, preferably in north florida/south georgia area, so it just feels like a good fit for me. Plus, I am just comfortable there.

If you are going raw numbers then I suppose UF>USF/Miami>FSU>Nova/Lecom-B

UCF and FIU being the mystery. Also, one can kind of consider mayo part of it, since if accepted and a florida resident you do get instate...but that is pushing it.

I live in St. Augustine, we only have one hospital. besides my thing says UF rocks that does not mean I go there. Thats where I want to transfer to, but I go to a CC SJRCC.
I was looking on its web site and if I join PTK then I can get Community service hours. I work at the hospital and I volunteered there when I was in high school but I can't anymore.

I think UF has tended to be huge on numbers. From what I've gathered from some of my friends who've interviewed there, they tend to have a "Harvard of the South" mentality. That being said, I still think they have a nice program, and it would be unfair to generalize every faculty member. Personally, my number 1 choice is USF, 2nd being FSU and 3rd Miami. I like the fact that USF doesn't lose sight of the humanistic and personal part of medicine; something that can be lost amid the prestige and sense of self importance; a trait I also find in FSU. Reason why I place USF as No.1 is due to its proximity, cost, and great clinical education. I believe Miami is similar to USF in a lot of ways, but I believe it's pretty expensive since its private. It's going to be awesome when the UCF and FIU med schools get rolling. Imagine having 6 MD schools in the state!

hey guys, i hadnt posted here in a while so i just wanted to say hey, im an MS1 at UF now, i really like it, im very very impressed with the faculty and their dedication to the students, pm if anyone has any questions at all

as far as applying goes, it definitely is unpredictable, i got in UF and not FSU when i would say my EC are more community service>numbers......

gluck to everyone

Hey All!

Great to see the 2008 thread up...I'm a fellow Floridian who applied and got accepted to the 4 MD programs in FL last season, and while I ended up elsewhere am still very fond of the FL programs and in particular might be able to answer q's in terms of their bent towards international/underserved programs (that's my passion and what I sought out in most of them).

Good luck to all! :luck:

Ohh well that's odd. What about doing an EMT course or CNA course, is that also limited to being 21 to perform such jobs?

how far is St. Augustine from Jacksonville? if its not far maybe you can try to hook up with volunteering at Mayo clinic or Shands Jville.

Are those 112 hours from college or highschool? Also, there are two categories of volunteer service:

one is medically related work: volunteering with a hospice, nursing home, free clinic, hospital, as an EMT-B, etc. Anything to do with medicine.

Another is volunteering out in the community i.e. with your local kiwanis or rotary clubs doing road cleanups and beach cleanups, tutoring kids, volunteering in the library, etc.

If you have a talent such as playing an instrument or being able to dance then you can try to volunteer by performing in nursing homes to entertain residents.

I was thinking about EMT....... They have a program at the hospital where I could have done it for free but if I do that then I can't work, and if I don't work then I can't do it for free.
I work as a Pharmacy tech ( would that count?)
I was also in a 6 month intern program with the high school and at the end of it the pharmacy offered me a job.
Jacksonville is about 50 min away from my house.

haha yeah after I asked you that I looked up the distance and realized where Jville was in relation to St. Augustine. I went there when I was too young to remember everything about our trip there and we went to both St. Augustine and Jville. Anyhow, b/c of that I thought it was pretty close but realized it was quite far away when I looked it up on my microsoft street and trips program.

Pharmacy tech can count to a certain degree but perhaps trying to get a patient care tech license, CNA license, or something that will allow you to work in a hospital might be better in the long run. Or seeing if there are any job openings in the hospital or clinical facility that are able to give you more exposure to medicine will be able to help you somewhat.

Well I do work with patients some times. our clinical Pharmacist is sort of friends with me so she takes me with her when they have to talk with the patient usually about chemo and stuff. Also talkes to most of MICU, SICU and ICCU every day and if she is not to busy she lets me go with her........
When I volunteered I followed a P.A around and he let me do stuff, and one of the Phelo guy ( who had a crush on me) taught me how to take blood and actually let me try it on patients.
I have my EKG tech certificate ( hospital offered some class) but they never have job openings there.
I really want to get some leadership experience. In high school it was more of a popularity contest and a science geek like me could have never won. Any ideas?

Well leadership doesn't have to be in the form of premed clubs or things of that nature. It can be in the little things you do like volunteering and being with a group where you are the one organizing things or being in some sort of leadership through being a manager at work or the head of the choir at church or stuff of that general nature. Your exp would probably be ok if it was in the clinical capacity as you mentioned above. I thought you were just working with one of those walgreen or cvs kinda places.

oh no, I work at the only hospital here. I work at there in house pharmacy, so we only supply to patients in the hospital.
There is a CVS opening near my house though, I was thinking of applying.

I would stay at the hospital because you will get more of a chance to meet people in the clinical setting that may allow you to do other things like shadowing or may get connections into other sides of the hospital to get an in with getting other clinical opportunities.

I understand that you are in community college so you'll still have at least a year to get volunteering and other clinical experiences in your 4 year university when you transfer especially if you go to UF.

ok...so its finally september yay! anyone esle feeling like this week we're finally gonna here about some interviews from FL schools??

From the interview thread UF and Miami have already sent out some invites. Hopefully, USF and FSU will start sending some out this week. Don't know exactly when they call; I've heard accounts ranging from wednesday invites to Saturday. I guess it could be any time, so keep those cell phones with you😀

Unless they change things, they usually call on Mondays only so perhaps next week will be the call for the first week. Of course things might be different now that REL is not there any more.

After some time after I sent them my stuff, they finally completed my application today. It is about time!!

congrats! I was supposedly complete really early (or so says the ADCOM at USF) but I didn't hear anything...anyone else hear from USF? I got one interview at UF a while back and I'm just waiting hear from the other FL schools....show me some love!

congrats to chudog for the usf invite. It's so nice to hear something early; looks like REL's projection for the first non-ED invites is pretty accurate. Hopefully, the rest of us will hear something good soon. :luck:

Woohoo so they are finally sending out notices. That's good to see. Congratulations. See didn't I tell you'd be fine. 😀 😛
