I do think a few people on SDN have been offered interviews at FSU. I regularly check the interview invite thread and while I don't yet see anything listed for either FSU and USF, it's obvious that isn't the case. I also agree that any FL interviews this early (i.e. anything before Christmas) will give you a pretty good shot at acceptance. The only thing is that I don't think schools are allowed to tell non-EDP applicants the "good news" until October 15, some arbitrary rule by AMCAS. Regardless, stay focused, calm (people will feel uncomfortably knowing you're uncomfortable), answer sincerely, and be prepared for typical questions as well as that "when is dishonesty advisable" thing that USF seems to be throwing at applicants recently. All in all, the interviews at USF are pretty laid back. Since they're closed file the interviewers don't know anything about you, good or bad, so you've really got to sell yourself. Actually that's false what you said about EDP people. EDP people find out well before Oct. 15th. EDP is the exception to the AAMC rule and all EDP apps are allowed to be notified before the Oct 15th rule.

The Oct 15th rule only applies to regular decision applicants which is one of the reasons USF doesn't do its reg. season interviews until late Sept along with the fact that they are obligated to notify EDP people before they start interviews with reg. decision people.

I know in years past they always found out 10 days after their interview.

I also know that NJMS up north also does EDP interviews in July and notify people of their decisions shortly afterwards. Outside of that one mistake your post was on target.
 
Looks like I was right, I just talked with a med student I know in the first year class. Her roommate is my friend that did EDP. Anyhow, she just told me they hear today about decisions.

So good luck to those waiting to hear back from EDP today.
 
How does a committee go about deciding that someone is not mature enough to be admitted to med school, though this person has a great personal statement, great GPA, great MCAT score, great ECs, great secondary essay, great LORs, etc.??? And by great I mean well above what the school expects from a school?
 
Hey all...I was wondering about chances of acceptance after getting an interview invite at UF...I have an interview there pretty soon...the MSAR just tells us the amount matriculated (not necessarily accepted)...any approximations?

Also, considering my interview in fairly soon and early in the cycle, are my chances any better getting in at UF now versus, idk, a January interview? In others words, do they tend to fill up the class early on or throw a bunch of people in the "on hold" pile early on?

Im a fairly average applicant (31 MCAT/ 3.8 GPA)...im just trying to get an acceptance there by Oct. 15!

Your stats look solid for UF, and the fact that your interview is early puts you in really good standing, although I'm not sure if UF is rolling admissions. One thing that I have been concerned about also is the accepted/enrolled issue which was briefly discussed on a different thread. It seems some schools will give you incentives (i.e. lower tuition) if you defer your enrollment for a year since many schools technically accept more people than they have seats for. Hopefully, others here can attempt to clarify this issue. In my mind, if I'm offered an acceptance and I place my retainer fee in their office, I'm in. But as far as the interview/acceptance ratio, there are some princeton/kaplan books at your local bookstore that list this info. I know at USF they typically interview approx. 450 students; of which 120 or so will be enrolled. Granted, ~32 are EDP and a few others are BS/MD 7 year track, so you're actually competing for maybe 65 spots in regular admissions.
And that actually divies up to 32 or so chairs since most schools try to keep an even male/female ratio. Wow, I'm actually depressing myself 🙁

I think from what I've heard, the numbers of EDP and BS/MD people varies from year to year. I gather last year there were 11 EDP applicants and this year only 7. There can however be as much as 25 or 30 EDP people from what I've heard. Also the number of applicants who do EDP might not always equal the number actually accepted as people don't always get accepted even if they are qualified. I've seen it happen before. Some will eventually reinterview and possibly get in. As for others, I don't know what they do.

7 year numbers is also subjective due to the fact not everyone who gets accepted to the program makes it in. Some will make it in via 4+4, some will not make it in but apply the regular route due to 1 or 2 pts lower on MCAT or GPA, and others will make it in but opt to apply out and go elsewhere.

I know. Whenever I have days off from work I spend way too much time on SDN, it's so unhealthy. I guess it's the fact that like many I've been "pre-med" for so long, I can't wait to get the ball rolling and quit worrying about getting into med school. Whenever fall rolls around and invites start getting tossed around I freak out:scared:

In regards to the UF acceptance issue, I don't know the exact nubers. I will say however that you should only hope for the best as UF is hard to get into even with your numbers. A friend of mine that goes there now had a 35+ score and similar GPA and extensive extensive extensive ECs, very mature, very strong letters and very strong essays. She ended up getting waitlisted originally though she eventually made it in. Prior to be waitlisted she was on hold status for several months. I've also known others who were put on hold never to hear back again from them.

UF works in the following way from what I've seen:

They interview a lot of people and only directly accept a handful of people from the first batches of interviews. The rest they will not reject nor accept or waitlist them. What they will do is put them on hold. They will wait til they have more interviewees from spring interviews to then make a decision. From hold status, some time in spring they will give you one of the following if they do get back to you: accept, reject, or alternate list aka waitlist. sometimes they don't get back to you.

When a former classmate (not the friend at UF but someone else) interviewed at UF last year, they told her that if you get put on hold, the next step is to ask what you can do to strengthen your app. They told her to keep updating with new volunteer activities like the kind they advocate: red cross, habitat for humanity, teaching, etc. and update them with it. They told this girl that she is still in competition and if she wants to be competitive while on hold she should do more volunteering or whatever they ask and update the adcoms with this and that will strengthen the app.

This is my understanding based on former USF students who have interviewed there. If you interview in the spring, I've heard you get notification almost immediately about waitlist, reject, or accept.

BTW in regards to my post above: I know this sample size is small but I draw my conclusions on at least 1 person who applied for the class or 2008 at least 3 who applied for the class of 2009 at least 4 who applied for the class of 2011 whom were interviewed there, many of who eventually matriculated. I also base this on some of the things people who pulled out their apps from there said regarding chances of getting in based on what adcoms there told them. Then there were a few examples from people in the c/o 2010's app year 2006 who I also extrapolate my understanding of this stuff from.

I just thought I'd point that out to you guys.

I think phone. Although, Miami might also email. I do recall a 4th year student there telling me back in 2004 that she got an email. FSU I believe calls you.

Thanks. That's what i thought but wasn't sure as I seemed to vaguely recall the 4th year I know out there get an email back in spring 04 when she interviewed.

Can't believe its been so long ago since she interviewed and that she is almost done with med school. Crazy how time flies.

So I guess USF and FSU call, Umiami emails, and I don't know about UF.
 
As to the question regarding uf interview/matriculation rate.. it is pretty high. I go to uf, and i took a medical professions course here in which one of the people they interviewed was an admissions director. They said that uf has the highest rate of of students who decline acceptance ( they cant seem to understand why this has been the trend for the past 5-6 years) and that ratio is that 1 in 3 interviewee's will get accepted. Its pretty solid, although you might have to wait for a while if you are on the waitlist...

In other news, i have an interview at uf and usf coming up, but i havent heard back from um, and fsu?? im actually pretty interested in UM boca raton campus. Hopefully, i hear from then soon.. hopes this helps

I think the ratio is acutally higher because in the MSAR book 1 to 3 is the matriculant to interview ratio (as opposed to the accepted to interview ratio)...so you have to take into account the poeple wo drop the UF acceptances and the people accepted off waitlist.

Also, is anyone else in my shoes concerning USF? I was complete there 8/9 and still no word of interview. In fact, people have been complete after me and have gotten interviews...and I got an interview from UMiami and UF! 🙁

Anyone else in the same boat?

I'm right there with you; although I'd be a bit happier if I had any invites. Been complete at USF since approx. the same time. I do know they can call at strange times. I've heard of some people getting invites past 5pm on saturdays, one person I know got his acceptance from them at midnight on a sunday. Granted, Most invites will be from 9am-4pm M-F, but there have been exceptions.

I received an invite from FSU and USF and I got my MCAT score 8/15. I am eagerly awaiting UF and Miami.

My mcat sucks, although it's halfway decent for usf and fsu. EC's are pretty good, typical volunteering, shadowing, research, charity involvement, etc. Letters are good. Hopefully the mcat won't hold me back.

when checking our status at miami, do they respond to our status checks between 2 and 4 tue-thu, or are we supposed to send a status check email bet. 2 and 4 on tue,wed or thur?

Don't get overly anxious yet. It is not even october and interview seasons are just starting in Fl. I think you'll get interviews and I think your profile is more then awesome for Fl. schools. Hell you even have a shot at UF possibly though that is harder to get into.

Your MCAT doesn't suck. I had a worse MCAT, about the same GPA and got into both USF and FSU (the only schools I applied to). I also applied later then most (applications weren't complete until about October). No need to worry about anything yet, you have a decent shot at every school in Florida.

Save worrying for medical school... it's harder then you can imagine...

I think with medguy83, it is still early and there's a long way for this cycle to go so he should just give it some time and he'll get the invites coming. I have a good feeling about that.
 
So I get this email from FSU Admissions saying my "application complete, forwarded to admissions committee and you will be contacted about interview" today but I haven't even filled out secondary, just was processed by AMCAS yesterday.

???? Is this the regular email you get after they process AMCAS - or is this a mistake????

No invite or information on secondary?!? - though I checked and my ID is valid on system.

Very confused - should I call them and say they made a mistake because I haven't filled out secondary or sent LORs?!?

Somebody Help - answers?!?

Here's hoping their emails just suck ass =0)

lol, great post :laugh: I am glad you thought so. Med school is different... never thought I would have to adjust to medical school but it is definitely a HUGE life changer. Now is not the best time to ask about school with the first test coming up on Monday :scared:

To everyone applying, I love medical school (except at the moment do to the upcoming test) but it is a big change. You really really have to like studying and learning or else you will absolutely hate this. More material is covered in a week then all the science classes you have taken in undergrad. Its overwhelming. I am still adjusting to it. You also should have a good support system. Just my two cents.

Also don't stress to much over the application process. If you don't get an interview immediately, there is no need to panic. It takes the schools awhile to get through the applications. Calling the schools to check on your status is always a good idea, but don't over do it. The admissions staff does get annoyed if people call every week to check on their complete file. Once you get an interview, prepare well for it. The interview will make or break you. The schools have chosen you for an interview because they already think you are a good candidate for their school number wise, now they just want to learn your personality and get to know you better to see if you are a good person and will make a good student and eventually doctor.

My thanks to soccer, Guju, and all the rest for the encouragement. I guess when it comes down to the wire I start to freak out wondering if I did enough, etc. In regards to soccer, I can imagine how much work it takes; I know a few MS3's who've gone through the classroom process already, and they all agree that they learned more in one week than practically their entire undergraduate education. Sounds like fun. Hope more people heard some good news from EDP programs. Can't wait until I can legitimately use this smiley:hardy: or the one with the clapping banannas.

Looks good. You should have a good chance at getting in to one of the Florida schools. Hurry and finish up your secondaries. The longer you wait to complete them, the more you are hurting your chances. Be prepared to wait a little while for an interview. Good luck!

Yes, you should email them (or calling might be better)...their application system is strange (weird emails are kind of norm when applying, but it gets better when you go here...or you get better at knowing what to keep and what to delete 🙄

Those of you who are waiting on an interview at FSU....just to keep you up to date, interviews have been going on for a while...we have had over 15 people interview this week (but most of 'em up to this point were FSU undergrads). Other Fl and a couple OOS schools are getting interviews now...so keep your fingers crossed 🙂

Feel free to PM me if ya'll have any FSU questions and I will do my best to answer them honestly 🙂 Just be forewarned that it may take a while for me to get back to ya if school is kicking my butt!

You will have a laid back day. There's nothing to really worry about! The interviews tend to be more on the low key side. If you are interviewing on 9/24 you will be touring TGH and having your interviews there. Good luck. I may see you in the morning for breakfast.

As far as people's actual interview experiences, I'd go to the main homepage of SDN and look up the MD interview feedback column and look under USF. There are actual past interview questions there, some of which they sometimes recycle as you'll see. I actually compiled all the list of interview questions from that on a 7 page list if you want me to email it to you. that was done because I was helping one of the EDP people.

Most of what I saw on that list amounted to questions like the following:

Tell me about yourself. What is a challenging situation or problem you had to face and how did you solve it? How do you go about making decisions? What are you weaknesses and strengths? What are your greatest achievements and greatest failures.

Also, sometimes they'll ask questions which are answered by your AMCAS app and they do so because it is closed file.

A few of the tougher questions on there had to do with ethical dilemmas related to herbal medicine, teens who are not having protected sex, etc.

There was also a few interesting ones like your opinions on what the greatest discovery in medicine has been in the past 100 years. My opinion on that question is that it would have to be the discovery of DNA which has led to our understanding of concepts such as the reasons Mendelian genetics and otehr genetic phenomena occur, it has allowed both for further scientific studies as well as many useful applications in society as with forensic medicine in crime scene investigation as well as in the case of DNA tests for parternity tests, etc.

I suppose Mike could give you more advice than any of us, but having previously gone through their interview process 😳 I can attest to the fact that they are very laid back about everything. They really try to make everything as comfortable as possible for you. In essence, just by getting to the interview level they're telling you you've got the stats to attend, now they just want to get to know you better. For me the day began at 8am. they served coffee, tea, bagels, etc. Some med students showed up for the free food, and they were all very supportive and seemed to really like the program. Dr. Specter and an internist gave some intro about their program; how much different it is than undergrad, how much we'll be expected to read, stuff you probably already know. We then toured the school area, classrooms, etc. The group (25 or so) was then split up after touring Moffitt Cancer center. Some had interviews at TGH, others at the College of Medicine. I remember some having slightly stressfull interviews, but for the most part everyone seemed to have relaxed, enjoyable experiences. I had maybe a few moral/medical ethics related Q's; everything else focused on my personal life, why medicine, etc. The interviews ended around 1-2pm after which were 4 or so hours centered on financing med school, other rural programs, military options, etc. Just make sure that you set aside the entire day. It will typically end around 5, so don't plan on anything before then.

I interviewed when REL was still director. He was so nice, and funny which made everyone feel very comfortable instead of the typical jitters. He told us at one point that out of our group maybe 3-4 would recieve acceptances, 5 or so would be rejected, and the rest put on wait lists. I got the wait list and never came off😡 Hey, that's life. Hopefully with the continuing clinical experiences and education it will be a different story this year. Remember to post your results; good luck!:luck:

They really try to make everything as comfortable as possible for you. In essence, just by getting to the interview level they're telling you you've got the stats to attend, now they just want to get to know you better. For me the day began at 8am. they served coffee, tea, bagels, etc. Some med students showed up for the free food, and they were all very supportive and seemed to really like the program. Dr. Specter and an internist gave some intro about their program; how much different it is than undergrad, how much we'll be expected to read, stuff you probably already know. We then toured the school area, classrooms, etc. The group (25 or so) was then split up after touring Moffitt Cancer center. Some had interviews at TGH, others at the College of Medicine. I remember some having slightly stressfull interviews, but for the most part everyone seemed to have relaxed, enjoyable experiences.
