Anyone know how UF handles things...Do the people who are put on hold at UF have a chance of getting an interview at some point or does that not usually happen? I mean, there are some schools that put many people on hold, and a bunch of them get interviews later in the cycle, whereas there are other schools where being on hold means very little chance of interview.

UF likes to look at the entire applicant pool before making definite decisions. All FL schools do not give out too many interviews, but UF specifically waits to make most decisions after reviewing a greater applicant pool. In fact, they accept most of their students in April just to give everyone a fair shot.

I hope this helps.

UF made it known in a few emails and on their site that you may not hear from them until Jan-Mar. They really seemed to stress the fact that it was customary to wait a long time in order to hear anything from them. Sheesh. I've always heard stories of people having to wait for test results from doctors, but it seems that trait seems to carry over into this area as well. I guess I've got to learn to be patient; something which after undergrad, mcat, exams, ec's, etc. etc. can seem like an eternity.

Hey Zissou, what exactly did USF tell you to do after you got the acceptance? did they send a packet of info, formal app, email? Must be awesome to actually make the move into "med student" status.:hardy:

Hey medguy,
USF sends an email containing your acceptance letter, as well as a packet containing a hard copy of your acceptance letter via snail mail.

they also send a form (in which u have two weeks to send back) that reserves a spot in the class.

Just got an interview from VCU today. Tally up another school that invites me prior to my own state's schools. 🙂

I'm actually in Richmond now for a rad onc interview at VCU tomorrow. It really is totally random when schools give you interviews, but you should hear from Florida schools soon I would guess.

Here's what we'll do...I'll give you every single one of my forthcoming OoS interviews and acceptances and all you got to do is give me that lil' ole Miami acceptance...fair enough😀

alright only 237 more posts in this thread and we can make part 2

hey all,

I am new to SDN, I am a FL resident but I attend school out of state. Until this point I have not heard anything from FSU,UF,USF, or miami regarding interviews. I have an interview in the boston area already and I am just wondering whats going on. I guess I will start calling each school to see what my status is-I expected at least 1 interview by this point 🙁

What are your stats, extracurriculars etc. like?

There are a lot of people who have expected an interview by now but the process is a lot more random. Goodluck but like you suggested I think calling to find out and get an update is the best solution. You won't be able to get an exact interview date out of them but you can gauge whether or not they've finished reviewing your app or at least put it in the consideration pile.

Just had my UM interview(s) on Thur and Fri. Have to admit as was much more impressed than I anticipated. Anyone been to Boca? What do they think of it? I think the clinical experience and curriculum fits me perfectly. Of course, it's a little bit of a risk because it's a new curriculum and they haven't had a class looking for residencies after doing clinical in Boca.

thanks man, good luck at your interview.. what're all the fl applicants up to today?

Thanks! I had a blast. I actually stayed at the Sleep Inn across the street. You know what? It was very nice. Clean, nice room, free internet, fairly comfortable bed. I think it was $109 a night.

thanks for the feedback offen... im glad to hear u had a great time @ miami.. it seems everyone has been really impressed with both campuses.. how was the interview at the main campus? laid back or very formal?? thanks in advance👍

To those who haven't interviewed for FL schools or those who are waiting for a particular FL school, good luck this week.
Because of Veteran's Day, I don't think we will hear anything Monday, however.

Anything new? Well, could anybody answer how FSU or UF makes their decisions about interview invites. From my experience attending UF and the constant emails from Robyn, I think you aren't supposed to expect anything from UF till next year. The only exceptions I have seen though, are if you're a FL resident with a 35+ MCAT and went to an Ivy league undergrad.

Hopefully this will be my lucky week with USF. I'm kind of wondering about veteran's day. Since it's today many businesses in my area are observing it tomorrow; i.e. no mail, etc. I guess interviews will still continue for schools like USF that do them on Mondays, but who knows. Schedule for an ideal week: Tues- FSU acceptance, Wed- USF invite, heck throw in a Miami invite and I'll be in applicant heaven. Even If I can hit only one of these objectives It'll be reason to celebrate the end of a pretty long dry spell.

I believe your thoughts on UF's invite policy are pretty accurate; i.e. they don't like to hand out too many acceptances before they get a better picture of the applicant pool this cycle. From what I've heard FSU tends toward the same line of reasoning.

A week like this (substitute FSU invite Tues, Miami invite Thurs & UF invite Friday) would be worth a human life...

From the incessant calls I've been making to USF, they give me reason to believe they're sitting on a juicy stack of apps that have been scored and await interview invites...Hopefully this is the week 🙂 ...(*Sigh* God I'm so sick of saying that every week)

I think UF tries to find diversity in undergrad institutions and they devote a lot of attention in the first months to FL resident applicants who went to top universities out of State. A really good friend of mine was interviewed last cycle in November and he was the only person in his group who went to a FL school for undergrad, most went schools in New England area. However, I know many people who were interviewed in the spring semester that went to FL undergrads and are current students at UF med.

For FSU, I hope they are not going toward that direction. It's hard enough to be from FL (not as bad as California) and try to find a spot in any med school, but it is even harder on FL applicants if some of the FL schools determine that they want to interview you, but only a few months later to see "what else" comes along.

Dude, I am totally with you. But I think I am annoying Miami more than USF though, but USF has given me hope 🙂.

My wish would be a Miami invite Tuesday and a Miami/Boca invite wednesday along with a USF or UF invite on Wednesday as well then round out the week with an invite at FSU on Friday.

I retract my earlier wish, other than all on the same day, that would be the ideal breakdown for me also...

...Speaking of annoying Miami, I think I hear them gag in the background every time they hear my voice on the other line😀...

USF is closed today and I would assume they are not doing any interviews. We usually get emails about interviews (to see if we want to put an interviewer up for the night or meet them for breakfast at school) but we have not received any.

Both UF and FSU do like to get a better picture of the applicant pool before making a lot of their decisions. However people do get accepted from these schools a week or two after they interview.

Good luck to all of you! :luck:

Hooray....Interview Invite from Miami Miller main campus and boca!!!

I just received invites for Miami and the Boca regional campus, Hooray!!!!

Finally the dam bursts; haven't heard of that many Miami invites for a while now. Good Luck! And to SoFLAKnight, I agree it's getting kind of crappy to keep saying the same thing week after week; "maybe this wednesday...maybe this thursday, etc.". I figure an invite from USF this week would put you around Dec. 10 for an interview date; which, if I'm not mistaken, is probably the last scheduled interview date for this year. Who knows? Right now with that possibility in mind I'm staring at :hardy: just drooling over the possibility of hearing something this week.

Many thanks to everyone!

I can only describe it up to this point as, emotional.

Wow! Congrats! Bound to happen. Does anyone know if they only invite on Mondays, and if so, at around what time they send the e-mails?

I may be a bit paranoid and over-eager, but can you blame me?🙂

I recieved my miami invite on a Friday mid afternoon via email.. before the invite i called the admissions office and was told that they send out invites Monday-Friday, 8-5, via email.. so u can hear from them at anytime during the work week.

Thanks. Is it just me, or is that like a double-edged sword (I hope I used that cliche correctly - I am new to all of these English expressions)? On the one hand, you can remain optimistic about getting that coveted e-mail, but at the same time, you become absolutely paranoid.

Either way, I am hoping to hear something from Miami; a friend of mine just interviewed at both campuses, and said it was amazing.

Congratulations to Gold and UFGRAD. Were you guys able to schedule your interviews today? When I called, no one was there to answer.

2 X Congrats to Gold91 and UFGrad!!

Hey Swamp,
I was able to schedule my interview with Agnes(i think it was her). I called at about 945am. I was able to schedule both the miami main campus and boca. They gave me a variety of dates to choose from. Hope this helps. Congrats on your invite as well!!

Does anyone know if FL schools give out interviews during winter break or spring break? It is a bit difficult to miss classes during the semester; I always feel like I fall behind if I don't attend a class.

And hooray, 100 posts. I am glad to do it here, on the Florida Schools Application Thread!

They must have have had a half day, I called after noon. I really hope Dec. 7th didn't fill up. Good luck.

Hey guys. I'm a 2nd year at UM med school (miami). If you guys have any questions, PM me and I'll try to answer them all. Good luck on your interviews and maybe I'll see you on your interview day at UM. 🙂

Hey, everyone. Thanks again.

I was able to schedule today on the phone. Just to throw out some info. In my email it said the first day to schedule for Miami was 12/03 and last was 1/25/08. For the Boca campus the first day was 11/20 and last was 1/24/08.

There are a lot of dates available to schedule, so I am sure they will invite many more applicants this week, but there weren't any dates for Miami between 12/17 and 1/11/08, I assume due to christmas break. Also, Boca's interviewing winter break was between 12/18 and 1/10/08. Hope this helps.

Most schools do not give interviews during these times. You wouldn't want to either because you would miss the opportunity to talk to the medical students. That can be very valuable in helping you make a decision. You will have to try to minimize the amount of classes that you miss when scheduling an interview. It's just a sacrifice most people have to make. Good luck!

How many people have heard from FSU?

How many people have heard from FSU?

FSU is the only school I have heard anything from. I am hoping to hear from USF finally this week. I got into FSU a month ago so I was hoping that means I am competitive at all the FL schools since I got in so early, but my theory hasn't been proven yet.

Yeah, I'm a first year. You guys can PM us if you have any questions about anything!

I'm hoping this is USF's week too...would you mind PM'ing me your stats/completion-interview dates to see where I stand w/ FSU, it would be much appreciated👍

I have not heard anything from FSU or Miami.... I have interview at both USF and UF. I would have thought I would hear something from FSU..??

I've been talking to a few other people who are confused about FSU as well. I've probably said this before, but it bares repeating. From what I gathered at my interview there back in Sept. they're trying to hold off on too many invites and acceptances until they get a better idea of the entire applicant pool; sometime around the secondary deadline I think Jan. is when you should see a deluge of invites and acceptances being thrown out there. Granted, many have already gotten accptances, but I think FSU is taking a lesson from UF this year. Which sucks for me since I'm on their "hold list". I've heard of people getting multiple acceptances to USF or UF and still hearning nothing from FSU. Kind of strange.
All I know is that my stats are above their average, I've got great letters, volunteer experiences, clinical involvement, etc. and I did great in my interviews and yet I'm on hold.👎
What the heck are they looking for??

Regardless, USF is still my #1 choice, so hopefully tomorrow I'll get that phone call I've been waiting months for (years technically).

You and me both, buddy..you and me both...

In any event, I'm gonna be banning myself from SDN till I get an interview, to prevent insanity from completely setting in😀...Good luck to everybody and hopefully I'll be on soon:luck:
