Florida Schools Application Thread (Part 3)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it ok to leave it blank and tell them to refer to AMCAS?? My friend is worried about doing that.

Well the question asks:

Enter information about your extracurricular activities that are NOT LIST IN YOUR AMCAS Application.
When completing sections, selecting Checklist saves your changes and displays the Application Checklist. Continue moves to the next section after the current section has been completed. Finish Later allows you to save the completed current section and displays the Application Menu. Use the Return to Checklist without saving changes link to navigate to different sections.

Make sure to take the MCAT only when you are absolutely ready for it. I think if you can get a good MCAT score next year, and do well in your postbac and do the MS in the meanwhile you can apply next cycle.

I was only going to do a post-bacc (taking upper-divison course) for the Spring semester and the first half of the summmer (about 25-30 credits). And hopefully start the MS the second half of the summmer. Should I hold of on the MS to start next fall or it doesnt matter?

Most MS programs start in the fall unless you do an SMP type of program like USF's IMS program.

Well the question asks:

Yeah my friend, the one with all the questions, called today and they told her to leave it blank and that they dont' even know why they still have that section. hahaha

Could you do me a favor and post the essay prompts in the Secondary prompt thread stickied up top??? That would be useful to others.

I want to do the Biomedical Science program at FAU. And they have application for all semesters. Should i stick to to route?😕

i could probably look this up from last year's postings, but when do Florida schools typically send on out email notifications of interviews (or no interviews)?

I think you should start in fall.

Thanks...I think this would probably work best since I can try to raise my Ugrad GPA.Can i show on the application that I will be starting a MS program?

I think most schools in FL start interviewing around October through March. I finally got my USF secondary submitted despite days of being unable to access their online section. I'm wondering who's running the admissions dept. now that REL has left. I heard from gujuDOC that he went to UCF or something.

Yeah I don't know the name of the person who took over or anything about them. I tried to get my friend to find out that info but she keeps forgetting their name when i ask her about it.

USF has traditionally done their EDP interviews towards the end of September and then interviews for regular season following EDP decisions.

I forget but I think they used to call for interview invites on Mondays. But if REL is around he can comment on how it used to be when he was at USF cuz I forget the exacts.

From the email sent to USF COM students: "Dr. Koehler will assume direct supervision and leadership for the Office of Admissions (at USF)."

The Class of 2011 Welcome page lists the following in charge...
Steven Specter, Ph.D, Associate Dean for Student Affairs
Danielle Schutz, Assistant Director for Student Affairs

Thank you. can you pm me his email address just for future record???

sorry i meant to ask...when are notifications given to students to pick interview days and such.

ive had my fsu application completed since the first week of july and i havent heard anything. im not sure if i just submitted everything way too early or if things are jsut proceeding without me.

Hey guys, I've posted this question in another thread but I wanted the opinion of fellow Florida school people on whether or not I should retake the MCAT. I just got my scores back from the June 15th exam.

I got a 28 O

8 PS
9 VR
11 BS

Just wondering if you guys thought I should retake? I'm a Florida resident and have a 3.74 overall gpa with a 3.77 science gpa from UF. I have a huge upward grade trend as the past two years I have a 4.0 gpa after I switched majors from engineering and those last two years includes most of my pre-med prereqs. Extracirriculars are pretty good with shadowing, research, volunteering, and I started my own tennis teaching business. I'm pretty bummed out about this score as I thought I could get higher and I don't know if i could be ready for the August exam since it's kinda soon. I wanted to apply to all the Florida schools mainly but also wanted to look out of state too. How is my score for getting into Florida schools or any OOS, should I retake you think? Any advice would help. I'm stuck.... 🙁🙁🙁

I responded in the other thread, but I think you have a shot at USF or Miami or FSU with those scores. With UF it can go either way cuz they can be a number ***** at times but at other times I've known people with similar scores to get in there so apply there anyways.

I personally don't think it is necessary to retake and would delay your application too much if you can't at least sign up for a August test date. I don't think its worth it at this point. Just get your stuff in early.

No, it's earlier than that. I interviewed at USF and UF before the end of September two years ago (regular decision). I interviewed at Miami in early October, but that was because of conflicts with my own schedule.

chudog and others waiting to hear about interviews, sit tight. You probably won't hear anything until next month at the soonest, even if you are a very competitive candidate. :luck: to everyone. 🙂

Yeah my ******* made a mistake and didn't realize I meant to say end of Sept. not end of fall for USF.

Usually for USF they offer interviews like one week before the intended date of the interview but if you ask them to have it on a later date they will make lee way for you to do that though most people interview the week after their invite.

I forget if invitations were given on Mondays or Wednesdays.

Usually schools that have an EDP process will interview students for that first and then move on from there with regular cycle interviewees. I believe FSU has an EDP program, so it is likely they won't interview you before they do the EDP candidates.

Most interviews in Fl. don't start til end of September usually so just relax and try to be patient as hard as it is to do.

Yeah its still September. I believe the first interviews are EDP and then regular season in like last week of Sept.-end of season.

MCAT
PS 11 VR 10 BS 9 WS S 30S
BCPM 3.72, Overall 3.76

Lots of extras/volunteering/clinical. Minimal Research.

How do you think I fare with the FL schools, particularly UF And UMiami?

I think you have a shot at Miami if you do have a lot of clinical and I believe UF is a possibility but itcan go either way as they are the toughest school to get into even with high stats.

Hey, I was wondering what it means on my USF online app when under the "application preferences" tab it states "not entered". I'm pretty sure I entered everything they needed. Probably should ask them, but I don't want to appear too anal.

This is my first real post on SDN, so I apologize if I did anything wrong!

Here's my info...

MCAT: 29Q (VR: 9, BS: 10, PS: 10)

GPA: 3.75

Research 2+ years, on the way to publishing a paper in November.
Shadowing an orthopaedic surgeon now for about 100 hours
Volunteering at a nursing home starting this summer
Some other random stuff to fill the app, but not worth noting here

I'm really hoping to go to UF, as it is my current school and I have a lot of ties to it. I know my verbal score could improve because I had to guess on a whole passage and generally felt rushed for time during that section. What should I do? What are my chances at the other FL schools?

I'd say you have a good chance of getting accepted anywhere in Florida. :luck:

From what I heard when I went to the UF Pre-med conference earlier this year, UF tends to believe that UF-premeds are better educated than other pre-meds in the state. (Yeah, it was "interesting" being one of very few non-UF people in attendance while they lambasted the rest of the state, but so it goes). So you'll stand a good chance there, but a higher MCAT would be better as they are more about numbers than anything else.

Also, I have FAP status on AAMC and other financial shortcomings. Does this qualify me for being disadvantaged? What implications does putting that on my app have?

Basically you'll just get reduced fees on the AMCAS primary application and some secondaries (most schools will give you are reduction and some won't).

Even with a 35+ I would never set my heart on UF because they are so damned picky. I mean if you get in that's good but don't have a broken heart if you don't.

Two former classmates of mine just barely got off the waitlist. One of them had both a higher GPA, higher MCAT score, and much better ECs then you with several years worth of teaching and volunteering experiences and she still was set on hold and then waitlisted and then accepted finally.

That said, your profile looks good for sure at the other Fl. schools and at UF it can go either way but there's no way of telling.

FSU likes disadvantaged students and it might help there but USF and Umiami don't place much weight on that stuff.

For all of you people asking what your chances are, you have to just apply and see. I don't mean to sound callous, but seriously, nobody here can tell you what your chances are. Acceptances are based on a variety of factors besides just MCAT and GPA, and there's no way to guess whether school X will like you but school Y won't. As long as your stats are above the minimum for getting a secondary (24 MCAT and 3.0 GPA), you are a FL resident, and you have applied before the deadline, then yes, you have a chance. Make your app as strong as you possibly can, and get the d*** thing submitted already if you haven't yet. It's almost August, and your chances are better if you submit sooner rather than later. :luck: to everyone applying.

I agree, just apply and see what happens. I know of several people whom I didn't think would get accepted into any M.D. program who ultimately got accepted. One was on the waitlist at usf until the end of June. Conversely, I know of some who have had stellar gpa's, mcats, ECs, etc. who had to wait out a year and reapply. That's just the way it is. I wish med schools admitted more than 110 or so students a year. That way at least those who qualify would have a better shot. Regardless, it doesn't really matter if susie from oklahoma thinks you have a shot, or Bob from louisiana thinks you should retake your mcat, ultimately it's your choice and the school's decision. I wouldn't be stupid and apply to a top tier school if I had horrible stats and think I got in, but then again stranger things have been known to happen.

Ok...Why is this is on the millionth page?! Come on people, this is the ever powerful Florida thread.

Oh yeah, and I got accepted to main campus today for those of you who have been following my 7 month battle.... 🙂

damn congrats on getting into the main campus. so now you get to do the research you wanted?

Hello,

I'm taking some of my science classes at a community college, does anyone see anything wrong with this?

Hello,

I'm taking some of my science classes at a community college, does anyone see anything wrong with this?

I don't necessarilly see anything wrong with taking a few courses at a community college. I know at USF there were many times where there were so many people registering for classes that some students had to take courses at HCC. I think most schools prefer to see you take the prereqs at a 4-year university, but I don't think it would be that much of a detriment. Just make sure to get good grades, as would be expected.

Thank you everybody!!!!!! Your support all this time has been amazing!!! Good luck to all of you!!

Greg are you in ?!!?

Nope. You have shown the waitlist still has a pulse, but I am not expecting anything. Already took the MCAT yesterday, secondary already in for 2008.

Ok. Thanks for the update, and please keep trying and never give up hope!!!!! I'm routing for you!

It sure is a good way to end the 2007 cycle by hearing that one of the regular and fav. posters around here got off the waitlist.

I think we should create a completely new thread soon for the new year of Fl. applicants.

I always knew you'd eventually get off that waitlist because of how much enthusiasm you showed towards it. I mean who else would go out of their ways to write LOI's and so forth if they weren't that interested in the campus. Now I hope you get that research you wanted and good luck in the fall.

Thanks Q, Guju, Greg, and everyone!!! I swear, when I called Hinkley my eyes welled up with tears and I had an ear to ear grin. I was so ecstatic!!! 🙂

I am a bit confused about the "Previous College" portion of the secondary, which reads "Please list information about your previous college activities." If I only attended one college, and all of my college activities are listed in AMCAS already, what do I fill this section with?

I also need further clarfication on the"Activities" portion of the secondary, which reads "Enter information about your extracurricular activities that are NOT LIST IN YOUR AMCAS Application." If all my activitiy information is listed in my AMCAS application, is it ok to leave this section blank, or just enter something along the lines of "please refer to AMCAS." ?

It seems like these two sections are basically asking for the same information.

I think you can leave it blank if it is on AMCAS. My friend called them some weeks back and they told her she could do that and that they don't know why they haven't gotten rid of that section.
