Unfrozen and Mr.Burns,

You two gals definitely get the SDN Oscar of Florida's most hillarious gals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aww thanks, guju. You make me all warm and fuzzy inside.

So, since lately there hasn't been too much activity about Florida schools here on this great thread of ours, and unfrozencaveman is really monopolizing my time, I thought I'd ask everyone what your favorite movie(s) is/are...or your favorite book..or your favorite band, whatever.

And while Debbie Does Dallas is indeed a classic, perhaps it'd be better if this was not in your SDN movie list. Unless of course this powerful film about the financial and moral difficulties encountered by today's youth in pursuing their dreams portrays an accurate depiction of your taste, in which case, by all means...

note: In looking up the synopsis for Debbie Does Dallas (circa 1978), I came up with fantasic consumer reviews on Amazon.com. I didn't know people took their porn so seriously... http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000051WBE/026-2990634-9794035

Ne'er was there a link anywhere I couldn't not click on. And now, you have sealed the deal on my "Amazon Recommends...." page being the worst in history. Amazon thinks I should read or view the following titles:

Nigella Lawson, Feast
Examkrakers Verbal Reasoning
Sex in the City volume 2
Saving Lives and Saving Money, Newt Gingrich (?)
Ben Dover- Housewifes' fantasies fulfulled
Propoganda and the German Cinema
Gene Simmons, by Gene Simmons
Managing your Husband's Midlife Crisis
Raclette, Quick and Easy!
Deep Throat
Night Nurse
Beyond Managed Care
Cobra, Starring Sylvester Stallone

I will stipulate that Cobra is the best movie ever, but they should know I already own several copies of Ben Dover. And who wouldn't agree with this gem from the reviews of the DDD new release:

all the action had been removed and now the film makes very little sense

All that cutting, and they cut out the plot? Unreal.

Burnsie, you are one sick chick. I admire that tremendously about you. 😉
What she said ^^^

But to get back on to topic about your questions:

I'd say some of my favorite movies in the American Movie Dept are:

Pirates of the Carribbean
Speed
All movies with Adam Sandler (Big Daddy- is my favorite)
Certain Chick Flicks like Legally Blonde and Ever After.

There are others but I can't think of them right now.

I also like some of the old movies like Parent Trap and Sound of Music.

There are Indian movies which I like too, but don't know if you'll know what I"m talking about.

As per Books: My two all time favorites are House of Spirits and 100 Years of Solitude.

I gotta say, Caveman, Gene Simmons by Gene Simmons is one of my all-time favorites. Night Nurse was okay, but I found the medical procedures fairly...inappropriate. But what do I know. If that's what medicine is really like, I think I'm definitely going into the right profession.

Haha, thanks Arsenic. but you didn't answer my question! 🙂 Guju and Endee, you guys rock.

You didn't answer either, Q. 😡 And thanks for the IM. I did study some for the test...I gotta say, though, EKG readings aren't my cup of tea. We had to do scenarios to get tested and all I can say is I'm so glad I got a patient with atrial fibrillation (a relatively easy reading) rather than the Type 1 2nd Degree AV Block one of my classmates got. Haha, that sucks.

Caveman- I gotta say that my favorite review of DDD (ironic initials, eh?) is this one:
"Like many of the dissapointed viewers, I purchased this DVD to relive my youth remembering the great version that I watched all those years ago.

This was nothing like it. It was absolute garbage. It had been totally destroyed and edited so much I could have shown it to my children.

I bought the DVD from a good distributor. The DVD was advertised quite clearly as sexually explicit, so I had no reason to doubt the authenticity of the DVD. How wrong I was. I was so incensed by it all, I wrote to complain to the distributor and immediately cancelled my long standing membership with them.

All I can say to any potential buyer is save your hard earned cash. Ths is pure crap and should be treated like so. I do not even dare to try and pass my copy on to some other poor unsuspecting victim. I would not want him to waste his time."

I mean I understand getting upset...but cancelling your long-term membership?? I would never THINK of doing such a thing.

I saw that. The upside is, I'm sure his kids have it in heavy rotation. So, it's not a total lose lose. But yeah man, it's hard to find a good porn distributer these days with whom you can build a relationship, and trust to deliver a quality product, enough so that you won't be so insensed that you have to warn the entire UK about their shoddiness on amazon.

I think I learned some good lessons about guilt today. One, I sentened the woman in court to death today for wasting my day. This came as a huge surprise to her, because she was just trying to sue someone for falling in their gravel parking lot.

Then I went to a U2 concert, where Bono made me feel bad about AIDS, Katrina, famine, Palestine, 9/11, Ireland, and how Larry, the drummer, must feel so left out. I wanted nachos, but then thought, Bono probably wouldnt eat something so fattening, particularly considering the horrors of apartheid.

Now I think maybe I should call Bono and tell him the injustice around DDD's new directors cut, and how Americans and Britons are putting aside their differences to unite against defiling the classics, and he appears to be doing nothing? He'll probably just be like "I only read Debbie Does Dallas for the articles", but I think once you get Bono on the case, you can really get some wheels in motion.

What didn't I answer? 😕 Favorite movie? Um, ok, well, my favorite movie, judging by how many times I've watched it, is this really cool DVD celebrating the half-centennial of Watson and Crick's discovery of the structure of DNA. The moviemaker did real-time computer animations of DNA being replicated and transcribed, and it's freaking awesome to watch. You can't get an appreciation for how fast those enzymes work until you see the model. 😎

Oh, and I'm a gen chem instructional video movie star, so maybe that's my second favorite. The best scene is when I pulled the handle to the safety shower. You have NO IDEA how much water comes out of those things. I hadn't ever pulled it before (that's a good thing, right???) but, wow, zero to total flood in about six seconds. Good thing I wasn't wearing a white t-shirt. :meanie:

That reminds me of some professors I've had. You can turn your exam in to be regraded if you think there's a mistake, but you could end up getting more points taken off if, upon regrading it, he realized he was a little too generous on any of the other questions. I think you were sharing an important lesson with this woman: if you're going to go to court, make sure you win or YOU might end up going to jail. Well done.

And I agree that Bono is changing the world one song at a time. If you want to call them different songs, since the tune is pretty much the same but the words are different, at least in their newer stuff. I think he should just write one gigantic song addressing ALL the world's problems and then retire. It could go something like:

The world is in such bad shape
Thanks to AIDS, terrorism, famine and rape.
It all makes me want to run and hide,
From Katrina, Iraq, and the Apartheid

I think we're onto something. I must get him on my cell phone...

P.S. My rhyming abilities, like my handwriting, really haven't changed since about first grade.

Oh Q...your favorite movie is a DVD on Watson and Crick? that is so awesome. Yet another reason why I didn't get a 43 on my MCAT! I appreciate low brow humor and gratuitous violence, while you appreciate important scientific discoveries. I'd love to see one of those instructional videos when you come to visit 😉

Damn you, lame winky face!

Haha man, I hope everyone on this thread comes to Miami - this is too much.

Honestly though? Watson and Crick? Does the climax of the film occur when DNA Pol. III in all its 5' --> 3' exonuclease glory timidly snips the bulge on the very long strand?

In any case, those porn reviewers wrote very thoughtful responses.. they take their 'erotica' very seriously.... lol.

Did you guys see Race for the Double Helix starring Jeff Goldblum as Watson? A classic! How could you not love Jeff Goldblum? When my mom finally bought a computer it was because she "trusted that Jeff Goldblum", who advertised iMacs.

It's a bit more than I feel comfortable discussing on a public forum like this, actually. You see, yrodri, the moviemaker had to simplify things for the sake of making the model, and well, um, in the movie, the DNA is NAKED. :wow: Not a histone in sight.

If I come to Miami, I will show the DNA video to all y'all in the privacy of my own home. Then you can write your very own biomolecular porn reviews and post them on AmazonUK. 😀

lol lol.

Acetylated Histones... how...erotic.

To be honest, I was really disappointed. I rented the film thinking that strands wrapping around each other, A and T double bonding, and G and C TRIPLE bonding (I didn't even know this was possible! 😱 ) would be really hot and something my boyfriend would also enjoy, but I felt the movie really fizzled. The plot was horrible (I mean, did they have to spend all that time in the lab??) and the acting was even worse. I seriously could have shown this to my parents. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they've already seen it.

I give this movie a big fat F for completely killing the mood.

Well, *you* obviously saw the edited version, not the original. :meanie:

The edited version prompted me to cancel my long-time membership... it was soft, like a gummy bear.

I am, hehe. Anyone else ? I am only waiting to hear back form one school (No, not U.F.) that could really tempt me into leaving.

Are we allowed to ask which one?

I really really liked UM, but I've heard back from a couple other schools that I also really liked. I'm not making any decisions until after second look weekends, but I did get into what I think might be my top choice so I'll have to see. If I don't like it or whatever other schools I'm interested in when second look weekend rolls around, UM is a definite possibility (what a dumb saying, but it makes sense to me!). I don't think you could go wrong with Miami, that's for sure.

Umm, so I just got an e-mail from Dr. Hinkley saying that the Scholarship Committee at Miami just met and has decided to give me a partial tuition scholarship. I haven't applied for any scholarships. I guess the form isn't necessary after all? What in the world? I'm so confused.

Congrats on the scholarship! That is awesome!

What form were you referring too????

Thanks!

Nothing much - just keeping super busy with my new job. Now that I've got two master's under my belt, I decided I'd better get a real job while I apply to medical school.

Thanks! There was a website that was included in the acceptance letter where you could fill out a form and apply for a scholarship. But I'm not sure if they're actually using it or not. If you can't find your acceptance letter, I'll see if I can find mine and get you the web address (unless someone else has it in front of them). Best of luck!

I guy at my old job looked exactly like Jeff Goldblum (circa Jurassic Park, not Nine Months). It was bizarre.

Anyone heard that Purple Ribbon All-Stars (with big boi) song, "Kryptonite?" It is ridiculously addictive. A bit repetitive, but catchy. You can listen to it here if you're bored http://www.musicremedy.com/audio/index.cfm?FuseAction=ShowAudioPlayer&AudioId=3929&Quality=5

Edit: I was hoping by posting that I'd get that song out of my head. Alas, 3 hours later it's still there. Quick, Caveman! Sing something!

Thanks. The letter is at my parents house - I called them and they gave me the website.

Has anyone had luck with scholorship searches online?

When do we hear about these second look weekends. Does Miami even have one? And when are they-ish?

They're in the spring. Some schools let applicants know when it is with their acceptance letter and some let applicants know a little later. I don't think Miami has one b/c I think it's more for schools that need to convince students to go $200,000 in debt at THEIR school instead of another, but I could be wrong. Maybe Arsenic knows?

This is exactly what I need convincing of. I also want some more lasagne.

And while we're actually on topic for once, does anyone have a match list for UM?

unfrozencaveman said:

Lasagne? What the...

I hear Wash U.'s second look weekend is ridiculous...they fly the students out (free flights are a good thing), and have a weekend-long party including free tickets to a Cardinals game. Kind of ironic considering I doubt they need to do much convincing of applicants at all. Oh well, I don't have to worry about going to that one since I would have wasted my money even applying 🙂

Hi guys,

I am an out of stater coming to Miami for an interview. I've never been there before - can anyone tell me a good area to get a hotel in? I'm thinking it would be nice to stay by the beach, assuming I can get a cheap hotel. What is better - Miami Beach, South Beach, or elsewhere? Also, would you recommend renting a car? If I didn't get a car, how much would a taxi be to take me from airport to hotel, and hotel to the school?

Thanks!!

We had lasagne for lunch at our interview. That's what all that tuition is for.

At Miami? We had tortellini. It was definitely the best interview lunch I've had.

Hi, Chimi. UM sends hotel info in the mail with your other interview material, so I would check that. A lot of people stay at the Days Inn or at one of the Marriotts; I stayed at the Biscayne Bay Marriott because my parents came with me and it's a little more expensive than the Days Inn but quieter (supposedly) which I needed because I'm an anal sleeper. I also wouldn't rent a car; just take the metro (I dont remember what it's called in Miami) to your hotel and a cab to the school (unless you're staying at the Days Inn, in which case I believe you can just walk). Good luck!

I just took a taxi from the beach to the airport last night, to the unbelievable tune of $32 (not including tip). I don't know where that came from- it was literally around $20 over the summer.

Stay on the beach if you have a couple bucks and are staying more than just the one day. Go all out and stay anywhere between 1st and 20th streets to see the action. If you are going for an in and out, and not planning on seeing the city, I would just stay near the airport, or with a student if Miami offers that.
If you stayed on the beach, there are no shortage of hotels, as you might imagine, and you could still get a good deal, depending on your interview date. If you did, I'd then consider renting a car maybe- getting to and from the airport, and then to and from the school might be more than a cab in the end.

hey, just FYI- if you stay on the beach, the metro rail doesnt go out there. We don't like rif-raf

cool, thanks for the advice. I didn't even know Miami had a subway/metro! I guess I'll wait to get my packet with the hotel info to decide where to stay and then whether or not to rent a car.

Ok, it's official, I have no idea how to read a match list. Are those good?
I think it's very good, actually. People read match lists differently...if they know for sure they want to go into neurosurgery or something, then they'll look to see how many of those students placed and where. But so much can change during rotations that I'm not set on any particular specialty yet, so I tend to look more at the locations of the residencies. Sure a lot of students placed at Jackson Memorial, but I actually think Jackson is a great place for residency. But aside from that, students placed all over the country, which is important to me if I decide I want to go out of state. One concern I would have with state med schools is that students primarily place in-state (some want to stay, sure, but I think a lot of times the med school's rep extends only throughout the state, so students end up somewhere nearby); UM, on the other hand, obviously has a good reputation everywhere and that's important to me since I don't want to feel forced to stay in Florida if I don't want to.

Argh, this decision is going to be pretty hard come May.

I've seen Miami's Match list before and I think if you are basing it on location, the variety of fields they got into, especially the competitive ones, etc. then HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLS YEAH IS IT AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀

So, is it better to go to a higher ranked school, or do better at a lower ranked school? (just generally- not specific to Miami and whatnot)
