Dude, you totally wouldn't want to do that. Not only would you violate international law (Antarctic treaty), but you also cannot appreciate from a picture or movie how badly penguins and their guano REEK. 👎

It's true that the entire continent could use a good Febreze, but there is something to be said for wanting a pet penguin. It might be just that they would fit in a backpack so conveniently.

But, I have relatives on the Faukland Islands, and they do, in fact, have penguins as pets.

Please notify your relatives that I will be coming to visit as soon as I can. I've always loved penguins, and having one as a pet would satisfy a dream that probably isn't appropriate to share on a public internet forum.

I've also always wanted a sheep. They're my favorite animals. Everyone's always like "but where are you going to keep it? it would tear up the house!" but I think that if I raise one from the time it's a little lamb, I could train it so that it's well-behaved indoors. I could bathe it and blowdry it's hair so we could cuddle while we sleep. There can't be a better bed buddy than a recently washed, soft, fluffy sheep. We would be best friends.
 
I've only ever had two pets. One, a fish, Swimmy, I found in cup of beer at a party, and another, Sea Hag, the only purchase I've ever made at a mall kiosk.

You could make it two and a half, if you count the year McGruff The Crime Dog followed me around Philadelphia, which was strange.

i asked the Miami admissions office about the status page and they said that its most accurate for people who have already had their applications reviewed or who have already had interviews.

if its seems like your status hasnt updated in a while though they said not to worry and to just call them for an up to date check. its definitely ok to call them, they are very nice! 🙂

I dont know of any yet (I am going to plan this whole trip during winter break). But I would check out www.ricksteves.com. It looks like this guy has been to europe a million times. He has an amazing website. I am sure there are lots of links to hostel rating websites. Or just google hostel ratings.

I also looove penguins and I am planning on building an igloo with a slide in it when I am older. Right next to the monkey cage and the wallaby home 😀 .

And the sheep longing story cracked me up. I pictured a girl sleeping with a giant fluffy sheep :laugh:

So I ate at a Mexican restaurant tonight and gave my debit card to the cashier (you pay at the front). After he swipes my card, he proceeds to TELL ME what my last name means in spanish. It wasn't like "Hey! your name means ____!" He said, "In spanish, your last name means ____". I thought, "yeah buddy, I know...I've had this last name for 22 years now. I would hope by now I would be aware I'm hispanic." This kind of stuff happens all the time, but it was the first time someone genuinely assumed I didn't know what it meant. Sheesh.

Just thought I'd share because I'm bored with nothing better to do.
 
Were you wearing a sombrero? If not, I can see why he would think you might not speak spanish, in a mexican restaurant and all.
 
Ha ha, I have a Mexican restaurant story too. I was about 11 or 12, and my family and I went out to dinner. The waiter came over and said, "Buenas noches, como estan?" So I replied, "Bien, gracias, y usted?" He was totally shocked; apparently the waiters at the restaurant gave this little Spanish greeting to all of the customers to make the experience seem authentic. He hadn't expected an answer, but obviously I hadn't picked up on that. So next thing I know, he's calling all of the other waiters to the table and making me talk to them, too. 😳 :meanie:
 
I try and learn spanish on my ipod on my way to work. I have a pretty bad feeling I am saying stuff like "Ecuuaaaaadorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" out loud on the T, without realizing it.
The other day, in Publix, I think this woman was asking me (in spanish), which was the kind of Jello pudding you make by cooking, and which kind didn't need cooking. This involved the most unbelievable amount of pantomime anyone has ever seen in a publix. We probably looked like to mating albatroses. And she was probably asking me what I thought of the dire food gap situation in Niger.
I need to learn spanish.
 
I actually have a much better story involving English to English translation problems...

My first day in South Africa, I was doing triage at a hospital, listening to people's various problems, and I'm just getting used to the accent, when this guy walks in and tells me he has a "pen in his ass". Ok. So, I muster up my most doctorly straight face, and ask him to elaborate, which he does, about how much it hurts. I see. So, I'm on my way to ask for backup (how do you triage pen in ass?), when the guy goes, "you really need to help me. I'm in a lot of 'pen'". Ohhhhhhhh, PAIN!!!
I was like, totally confused!!
It turned out, this guy was just trying to play hookie from work, which ended up being a huge pen in my ass for the rest of the day. Still. I'm an idiot.

It's funny to think how words in different languages would never be mixed up. Like in Spanish, "pluma" would never be confused with "dolor." Reminds me of when I was in Mexico with my family and yelled loudly what I thought was "look! a hut!" (I was excited...it's not often I see a hut in the states.) I failed to realize at the time that I had actually used the word for vagina instead. Chosa...chocha...eh, it's all the same to us gringos.

:laugh: One of my Spanish classes discussed how easily you can say something bizarre or wrong if you try to translate literally. The title of the chapter was "Yo Lata Mosca," which makes no sense to a native Spanish speaker. A bilingual person would understand that it is the literal translation of "I can fly," where "can" is a tin can, not the verb, and "fly" is the insect, also not the verb. :laugh:
 
Has anyone heard of anybody getting in off the waitlist at UF yet?

Anyway, Mike- I have two friends on the UF post-interview hold list (who, I might add, have some ridiculous stats to be on any hold list IMHO), and they are still twisting in the wind out there...

Did you not believe me before? They're almost as good as the Christmas cookies my roommates and I made today. I ate about 10 of them, and now for some reason I don't feel so well. Must have been the pineapple I ate earlier.

They have mint everything now. Milky way, hershey kisses. Even mint covered junior mints. And I have now eaten far too many.

I went on a massive Target binge today. It snowed in Boston, and in related news, I dont like snow very much.

I'm currently watching a story on Sportscenter on Bodacious the Uber-Violent Bull that broke every bone in a guy's face, then smashed a guy's orbital and cheek bones despite the fact that he was wearing a facial cage. I'm not exactly sure why a person would want to ride angry cattle, but to each his own.

I see you befriended Georgetown's competitive applicant pool list, too. I say we make just one withdrawal letter and split the money on a stamp. It could read something like this:

Dear Georgetown,
I see you have placed us on your competitive applicant pool list. Well, this letter is to inform you that we are removing you from our competitive medical school pool list. Have a good day.

I've noticed that the dying of this thread has coincided with guju's apparent refusal to post. Once again, guju's to blame!

Is anyone thinking of spending a weekend at UM, going to classes and just generally checking out the scene (since they don't have a second look weekend...I don't think?)? A friend of mine and I are thinking of doing this, I'm just not exactly sure how to go about it.
 
I'm down. Do they really not have a second look weekend? I wanted to try the tortellini. Plus I need help deciding between Miami, and er, Miami.

Well, right now you need to decide between UM and UF, and I'm sure others will be in the mix VERY soon (I sound like Paula Davis). I don't think UM has a second look weekend because I think only schools in the top 20 or 25 generally do this, but if you guys are interested in checking it out again I say we pick a weekend and all try to go then. Then we'll make UM pay for our lunches, and we can take turns driving Dr. Hinkley's Nissan 350Z around. Caveman, you bring the mint M&Ms.

Haha actually no, Mr. Larkin mentioned it when I visited USF; apparently, his car is a hot topic everywhere. But it's my dream car, so I gave mad mental props to Dr. H and UM for choosing a dean with such a fine taste in automobiles.
 
I'm also a fan. Some plumbing had burst above the admissions department and Hinkley told us there was so much water, you could "wash a Nissan 350Z up there". It was an oddly specific example.

Burns, did you interview on the very first day at UM? Did you meet another guy from Duke there?

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww someone missed me. I feel loved. :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

I had a lot of things to do this weekend and week. And have quite a few things to get done within the next couple of weeks so won't be posting much.

BTW, you guys crack me up with your commentary on mints. My favorite mints are ANDES!!!!

I love the 350 Z's as well!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to be in love with the Toyota Celica my freshman and sophomore year. But lately I've converted over to the 350 Z nissan as my new fav. sports car that is semi afordable (meaning good but not ferrari great).

No, I interviewed Sept 23. Do you remember his name? I have a few friends who interviewed at UM and I know several of the Floridians, so there's a good chance I know him.
 
Oh btw, speaking of ANDES mints, I was going to make chocolate chip cookies with andes mints just last year. Didn't ever get around to it though.

He graduated '02 or '03- he's a friend of mine from postbacc at miami. Good dude.

Anyway, now I'm really curious as to what the Miami students do for fun. I wonder where they go out. I dont think I've ever chanced upon one out and about.
I do remember though, the year before, a friend of mine came from OOS to interview, and they invited her out for later and they were going to The Rat. Anyone who has spent any time on the Coral Gables campus knows how terrible that is.
 
Just wondering if anybody that was put on "hold" at UF has received the holiday acceptances that supposedly come around this time of year?
 
Since we are talking about dream cars 🙂 .... my dream car since I was 10 has been a Corvette. Then after test driving the 2005 Corvette, I feel in love all over again. 😛 How can you not love a car with 400 hp, goes 0-60 in 4.2 sec, and has a top speed of 186 mph? 😉 I know what you are going to say, if you are going to get a new Vette why not get the 2006 Z06? For me, all those extra vents break up the classic lines on the Vette and I just don't find the Z06 as aesthetically pleasing. Man you can tell I'm a girl!
