Hello! I am Joshua, a post-baccalaureate student completing my pre-med prerequisites for medical school. I compiled this information for my own knowledge until I realized others may find it interesting as well.

This information is meant to provide unbiased insight into differences between salary and cost of living for Family Medicine physicians inside the United States. The salary data was obtained from Salary.com and the Cost of Living data was obtained from Bestplaces.com, other than for US Territories. A score was obtained by dividing the salary by the cost of living score. This number was then divided by 100 for legibility.

The placeholders for United States base salaries have been added at $250k, $225k, US national FM physician average ~$206k, $200k, $150k, $100k, and the US national average of $55k. The purpose of this is to show what an FM physician really makes against the national average cost of living. For instance, an FM physician in Des Moines, Iowa makes one of the lowest salaries, yet due to the cost of living, they make close to $250,000 compared to the national average. An FM physician in New York City makes close to $250,000, yet due to the high cost of living, they take home comparatively less than $150,000 compared to the national average. That is about a $100,000 take home difference!

Only four cities and states placed above average as being green in all three categories.
  • Wilmington, Delaware
  • Detroit, Michigan
  • Baltimore Maryland
  • Houston, Texas
