Hey guys, I've been searching for good threads but haven't seen any too recently, so I thought I'd toss this question out:

Anyone currently in or considering a FM residency in the Chicago area? What's the word on the street as far as good quality (or, actually, bad) programs in the area?

Thanks for any input!

applying for peds, not family...but did my family rotation at macneal in berwyn and enjoyed it and thought the teaching was really pretty good...feel like I've heard pretty good things about illinois masonic...if I were applying family I'd def be interested in both...

Hi, I'm wondering if folks have experience with any of these programs whether as rotating students or as residents/graduates. I'm not sure yet whether I want opposed or unopposed, but I'm sure that I want to work in a midwestern city with a diverse population. Chicago always sounded and looked great to me (I'm from not far away in Indiana). I enjoy working with Spanish-speaking patients. Northwestern sounds like a cool program, but I also realize it's quite young. I like the leadership/policy aspect. I desire a program that will provide strong OB and procedural experiences as well. I'd prefer that it be academic affiliated. I realize there's an AAFP directory resource, but I'm looking for any personal experiences and thoughts. Thanks!

Chances are unless you do it at SIU or something, you wont find such a program in Chicago area. All the programs will have Ob/Gyn residencies which you compete with.

And my Ob/Gyn attending graduated from Northwestern years ago and said it was an awesome program then, and still is. So chances are NW would not be practical. You can try Rush Copley FM. But I have no idea how their Ob curriculum is (didn't interview). Also, I don't know your status (IMG/AMG/Visa etc.), so difficult to give ideas.

I went to med school in chicago and interviewed at a few programs. Our FM director told us the top 4 we MUST apply to in the area were Illinois masonic, west suburban, Macneal, and lutheran. I absolutely loved illinois masonic and if my fiance hadn't received a great job opportunity in Denver, that's probably where I would have ended up. The faculty were great, residents very friendly, and the curriculum seemed very flexible to pursue whatever you wanted. West suburban was definitely the program to go to if you wanted to work hard and get tons of OB and procedures. TONS and tons of OB. They also have a strong OB fellowship. As for the big name academic fp residencies, generally those wouldn't be at the top of my list. Rush Copley is not actually at the Rush main hospital (it is out in the suburbs), mostly IMG, and based on classmates' sub i experiences there it's not really a strong program. Loyola is misleading bc you are actually doing most rotations at county...which is a really interesting experience, but again, mostly foreign medical grads, not the strongest program (I did my sub i here if you have specific questions). UIC was a good program if you want international experience. I don't know too much about northwestern but we did receive a transfer from there into our program this year due to a variety of reasons (you can PM for more info if you want) MacNeal seemed like a strong program...It just wasn't for me.

Anyways, that's just my rough summary of all the programs, feel free to message me with with more questions and Good luck!

Rush-Copley isn't really RUSOM? What? I interviewed there, they're the RUSOM FM program.

Not sure why its "not really Rush".

They have Rush in name...but they aren't at Rush hospital...and they are FAR apart (about an hour drive). I just meant it was misleading to have the name and not be at the hospital, so if someone was expecting that, it's not really the case. I went to Rush and loved everything about it, but family medicine residents at Rush copley were not part of any rotations we as students had at the main hospital (I did not interview there so they might do some that I am not aware of). There are a couple great faculty members at Rush that also worked at Copley, but for the most part medical students in my class had very mixed experiences with sub i there.

Sorry if the last post was confusing, edited it to what I meant!

I'd think that that having the FM program in Aurora is a great idea. FM residency at the main site would be terrible since they have other residencies to compete with and thus making it opposed = not good.

Regardless, I've rotated with Rush students during my FM rotations, and they said they were either given the option to do it at private FM docs offices or at Copley. I guess if you were implying that Rush-Copley isn't at the Rush medical center, then yea, that's true. But this is true for many FM residencies where the program is located away from the principle institution.

Make sure you look at West Suburban - awesome program. Although, if you are from Indiana, also check out Ball Memorial in Muncie and Memorial in South Bend. All great OB heavy/proceedure heavy programs.

I'm a FM resident in Chicago. I pretty much interviewed at all of them. The absolute best are : Advocate IL Masonic, MacNeal, Lutheran, and West Sub

Masonic: Great all-around program, perfect location
MacNeal: oldest program in IL
Lutheran: nice hospital
West Sub: nice hospital, lots of OB

For me, it all came down to location.

Awesome feedback! Thanks for your input

Avoid St Joes' has issues with IMG's. Others are good as posted

Hello! I currently have several interviews scheduled in the Chicago area and am thinking of canceling some in order to avoid burnout - I am very curious to in know what happened to the transfer from Northwestern. Is there a way you'd be able to communicate with me privately? (sorry I'm new to this forum so am not sure what "PM" means). My interview is coming up soon so your response is greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!

Just make sure you consider the location of the residency. Chicago has an insanely high crime rate, and some areas are worse than others. I have a few friends who live in Chicago and they tell me some places are really really bad. From what I understand though, it has gone done in recent years. Be safe friend!

Thank you for your input. I am a new member, but long time viewer here at SDN. I'm applying to a lot of the Chicago FM programs and have a few interviews coming up. I am very interested in staying in Chicago as my significant other is already a resident in the area so I'm nervous about matching. Any advice regarding Swedish Covenant, NW Lake Forest and Advocate Christ? Thank you in advance!

I'm applying to FM programs this cycle and want to stay in/around Chicago, does all of the above still hold true? Have any of these programs fallen off the list? Any other Chicago programs that can be added to this list?

You're applying for the 2017 match? It's a bit late if you haven't already submitted your application.
I interviewed at all four of those places above and it's still true.

I've already interviewed at them all as well, I just wanted to hear other's inputs regarding their positions now. I am specifically debating between Masonic and Lutheran at this point (any thoughts about this would be appreciated!). Also, I think UIC's program is pretty solid now as well, I think it's safe to say it's up there with the programs that have been mentioned.

Hey guys, great informative thread, I'm an OMS-3 striving for fm in Chicago, any opinions on the Adventist hospitals. Also, our school emphasizes several months of audition rotations, would you guys recommend it or believe it's unimportant. I feel they're good to build a better connection and to see if you like the place.

Definitely recommend it to see if you like the place and people. I auditioned at my top choice and loved it. When I returned for an interview, I realized that had I not spent some time at the program, I probably wouldn't have ranked it so high.

So it's definitely not required to get interviews there, but as n3xa mentioned, doing auditions is the best way for you to get to know the program and decide if its a good fit for you.

Having a hard time deciding how to rank UIC, MacNeal, and West Suburban. Overall, I want the one that will leave me well rounded and with the best outpatient procedural training. Would appreciate thoughts from other current applicants

With West Suburban, it'll depend on where you end up for outpatient clinic. The bummer is that you don't get to rotate between clinics.
