I'm currently an MS4 at an offshore school. On the Clinical Medicine page of my school's website, it states:

"Since a few states in the US require a clinical rotation in Family Medicine as a prerequisite to licensure, it is highly recommended that all students complete an elective rotation of at least four weeks in Family Medicine."

I am scheduled for a 4 week FM rotation this summer, but most of the students I know have done a 6 week FM rotation. Would limiting myself to a 4 week rotation make me ineligible for licensure in certain states? I tried to find some sort of a list on the internet which has requirements for each state about this but couldn't find anything. I'm not interested in any particular state. Does anyone know the states which require 6 weeks of FM?

The thing is I want to do pediatrics and I don't want to do any non-peds electives if I don't have to.

Thanks.

I don't know about your school. But I thought FP is one of those core rotations along with Internal medicine, surgery, peds, obgyn and psych. This is the first time that I hear about doing FP as an elective only.

At my school (MUA) the cores are Psych, IM, Surgery, Peds and OB/Gyn. FM and neurology are considered electives, but are considered core rotations at most U.S schools I believe. Even at SABA and AUC, FM is an elective, not a core.

A family medicine rotation as a medical student is required for licensure in California.
