FMG and J1 visa:

It is really a shame that nowadays most of the positions in all specialties that are left for FMG are filled with people of Western European countries, Canada, Australia ,India and China. Come on!!!!

I thing is not fair, specially taking in count the idea of this of visa (exchange visitor). What we are exchanging: knowledge and skills, personally I don’t think that our medicine is completely superior to theirs (specially the first 3 places).

Where and I training the FMGs we have come from UK and Germany (all of them whites), some of them where attendings in the home countries. Theirs skills and knowledge is as good as any American graduate students, residents or attending. So why they come here; basically for the money they can get here. Even with a J1 visa they want to stay (that why the waiver is so on demand).

As a leading country is our duty to help the less fortunate and poor country, in terms of heath and medicine this help from us come with little voluntary trips of two weeks to some undeserved area in Africa or South America. We may operate 50 patients of cleft palate but there will thousand more waiting. We may donate equipment but if none knows how it works it will be useless. The best help we can give to those countries is train theirs physicians and hopefully one day they will improve their health system (where is really needed!!!).

Why train physicians of wealthy countries where they have all the specialties and a good health system (in some cases better than ours), personally I don’t think they need our help. The vacancies available for FMG with a J1 visa should be for physician of poor countries where they lack several specialists.
