I know FMGs (as in US citizens who went overseas to do school; Carribean/SGU) dont have trouble getting into mid tier IM programs....but after getting into a mid tier or upper tier IM program how much difficulty do they have getting into GI compared to AMGs?? Is it pretty much equalized and now based on residency performance and research? Or does the FMG label still effect your chances a bit?

GI is remarkably competitive at the moment and that prospect is not too likely to change. I suspect that you may still find it hard to get a fellowship with that background regardless of residency performance. If you are dead set on GI, take as good a university program as you can find for IM, preferably one that has a hx of taking its own fellows. Good luck.
