a little clarification:
i, too, have called around to local veterinarians and have been able to do some ride alongs and have consequently gotten some great equine experience with both general health maintenance and theriogenology. i have made similar calls to some local dairy and beef farms and have gotten very little response after explaining my situation. i am quite interested in farm management & food animal population maintenance and care - but have struggled to get experience as i live in the middle of a city (for several reasons). and we all know that if we have not done "it" we cannot reasonably express an interest in doing whatever it is. so i am actually considering making some kind of statement in my application regarding the disadvantage i have faced due to my living situation in a short essay.
i am pre-vet and do not qualify for formal externships that veterinary students perform during the second half of their education. i have, however, been able to fill some open spots that veterinary externs never filled on the schedule of some organizations. this is how i have approached gaining one on one experience with veterinarians in order to boost the variety of my veterinary rather than animal experiences - which while valuable do not seem to be weighted heavily by some of my top choices schools. there have been hoops to jump through in order to gain access to some of these opportunities, but my the experiences far outweighed any emotional or monetary cost.
lastly, since the OP, i have been able to find the dairy farm that my friend from TUFTS externed at - i will contact them tomorrow and see where it gets me.
thanks for replying.
