Hello,

Making this post for a friend because he doesn't have an SDN.

Notes:
Location doesn't matter to him.
He's interested in Ophthalmology, and Ortho (Prob 70/30) - The only factor he really cares about is he wants to go to the school that maximizes chances to match Ophthalmology
His current mentor has connections at Miami
He's from Canada so the cold does not affect him, but he's also Nigerian so he has experience with the heat.

Michigan (40% scholarship + 21k fin aid grant) [200k COA]
- Higher Ranked

Miami (full-tuition) [180K COA]
- 3 year med program

Curriculums? More or less equal, P/F preclinical
Honors/AOA - Both have the same amount of Honors and ranks students
Research- He's willing to do it, but isn't particularly fond of it.
Culture - Both are "party" schools, and he is a homebody.

Anyone have any insights or advice?

They both matched several students into ophthalmology this year, so whether or not he's competitive or not will 100% have to do with his med school performance. I'd recommend he care about more than just ophthalmology, because it will matter in his day-to-day life.

Match lists below:

Michigan seems to match at more prestigious programs, so maybe that's something to take into account if it matters to him (really shouldn't, since he doesn't even care about research).

if your friend is certain about ophthalmology, Bascom is gonna be a great place to do research and make connections.

I'd go with Michigan here. Its optho program is still top-ranked, and it's a powerhouse in surgery altogether. I wouldn't place to much emphasis on a particular specialty because many people decide to change, and Michigan has more well-rounded top residencies.

If set on Optho, Miami >> Michigan hands down.
--Miami runs the #1 Optho hospital in the country (for like 10 years in a row).... and they give students lots of opportunities
-- you get to see referrals from all over the world as Miami has strong international programs/referrals
If not set on Optho but want a competitive specialty, Miami >> Michigan
--
Miami has a higher percentage of class match into "competitive" specialities than Michigan in 2020 & 2021 --- not sure about this year but the match list for this year was on par with any T20 school--- check out this data

If no idea what you want to do, Miami >> Michigan
-- you will see unparalleled diversity in cases and pathologies at UMiami AND have access to any research you could possibly want
--between the public hospital- Jackson (which has a top 5 trauma center), the VA, and UMiami private hospital network (which includes the #1 eye hospital- Bascom Palmer, an international transplant center, one of highest funded spinal cord research centers in world, and Sylvester Cancer Center- a NCI facility)

also, from a student body perspective--- Miami is one of the most diverse med schools in the country (i think like #5 or something) and there are so many opportunities available for getting involved with life in Miami -- both as a med student in community, but also just socially.

ALSO MIAMI IS FREEE !!!!!!

Miami 100%. The chance to network and have mentors at Bascom is literally unbeatable

Most likely this person goes to Miami, there's another post where they shill on it Case Western vs Miami (half-tuition scholarship)

We need to call these people out, ideally people should disclose their biases.
