This goes out to all so called "international students". There is definitly a chance of getting into a US medical school. As an international student i was also skeptical about getting any interviews but so far i have received 3 (no acceptances though) and i hope to recieve more. The road is certainly tougher for those without a green card but not impossible. So keep your heads up fellows. Peace.

Yea it's hard, but I submitted my app really early and I have been getting positive response.

On an unrelated note, here is the website for this year's Green Card Lottery. It's free to enter, but hard to get:

I second supereagles' post....i have so far received quite favorable responses through this dreaded application process. So keep all ya hopes up!!

btw, congrats supereagles and calebho51...

First of all, ConGraTuLaTion to you all that've been accepted into Medical School. It does feel Good knowing there're others who are going through it, AND have succeed! Seems like there's still hope!

Lately, I do feel depressed~ Despite the hard-earned grade, work, and accomplishments, it seems like I'll never be able to afford Med. School. Increasingly Feeling hopelessss. Am I here to fail in US after all that's been thru'? 🙁

Would you mind sharing how you deal with it financial wise? ANY suggestion would be greatly appreciated. As you can see, I'm really desperate. Hopefully can find some hope there.

Best Wishes to all.

Hi,
Congratulations on your interviews.

I am an International Applicant applying for Fall 2005 entry. 🙁 Could you please tell me what kind of stats are needed for an Intenrational student (India) to get into US schools.
I will post my stats soon..

I think an above average academic record is expected from international students, although just like other applicants, there's no strict cut-off for most schools.

Because many applicants have good academic record, and it's harder for int'l students to get in, it's necessary for int'l applicants to be strong in Letters of Rec, Extra-curriculars, research, and interview skills.

c'wing, I am a US citizen, but I was looking for my brother who is Russian citizen, and there are loans for international students as long as you have US cosigner with good credit.
Those loans are similar to what US loans would be.
There is a website, I forgot the name, something like internationalstudent.com or so, if you do the search on ask or google, you might find it.
Don't know if that helps, hope everything works out.

I got 4 interview!!!! Yay

However, I try not to bring up the pre-secondary rejections.

Hey asama, off topic question, is that guy who stuffed a gazillion hot dogs in a minute and won the Nathan's hot dog competition, famous there in Japan?

Hey, if you don't mind my asking, why do you all want to come to medical school here in the United States?

I mean, I can understand if you are from, say, Angola, you might not have anywhere else to go.

But it is my understanding that countries like India, for example, have some of the best medical schools in the world.

Yeah! Takeru Kobayashi! I think it was 20kg in 12 minutes. Ironically he's not that popular in Japan. Maybe it's something that we're not particularly proud of. I believe the runnerup in that contest was also Japanese. I'm not going to insinuate anything here.😛

I'm applying because
a) My English has an "American accent"
b) It's a good combination of quality and "ease of financing"--not to say US medical education is cheap by any stretch of the imagination.
c) Quality of life
d) Easier to eventually get US citizenship

Please tell me you are kidding!

I couldn't help but respond to this one. According to the answer "a" you gave above, if you had an English accent would you apply to schools only in England? How about a Jamaican accent? That answer is just too funy. Just don't mention the reasons why you're applying in the U.S. during your interviews. 😀

Actually...I think I'm probably better off saying that I'm in in for the money rather than give these reasons. I may be stupid but I'm not THAT stupid.😀

So you're basically conceeding that you have no legitimate reason why you're applying to U.S. med schools. Oh well. At least you're honest. You're obviously going to have to lie during the interviews if they ask you why you're applying here. If you're going to lie anyway, you might as well go all out and tell them you want to one day be reunited with your father who was American because you were a war baby. Tell them you were born right after WWII and that you just look young. That will definately get you in. 🙂

Dang, you're good. I have no good reason to apply to US med schools. Actually, med schools in Japan aren't all that great. There is no such thing as residency which scares the hell out of me. I mean seriously, who can expect to work as a physician without any residency training. Other reasons are that I spent a bit of time in the states and I really like the quality of life there. It's much better than what we have in Japan although I have to say that you have a lot more letigious society and seems to demand perfection a lot more than in other countries, including western Europe. I don't really agree with US political philosophy but on the whole, I would really like to live there. I have looked into other medical schools in other countries and even though they might appear cheaper that is not the case when you have to start from "0" credit. Remember how hard it was to get your first credit card? At least I have state-side credit so getting the lower interest loans won't be so bad. I could ramble on about this forever. Oh well. I think there is SOME legitimate reasoning in all of this.

Well people i think we are mistaking the intention of this thread in the first place. In case y'all have forgoten it was meant to offer emotional support to each other and not to psychoanalyze asama527 obvious issues.

Thank you, supereagles. I was beginning to think that nobody would remember that. 🙂

Sigmund (sp??) Freuds on SDN

Again to defeat the purpose of this thread: the good thing about American medical education is the money. There is money to perform research on monumental scales (you might have heard of the controversy at the NIH concerning funding research of sensual and sexual nature), and as one research-minded, it will be a good hit for me. I am international as well; applying next year. . .

To restore the purpose of this thread, I think I may need some form of support when I start applying, hopefully speaking 🙂 .

Hey guys,
I was at GW's open house and a question about international students came up. They said that international students ( students who enroll in US medical schools ) are not allowed to practice medicine in the states! After the MD they have to go back to the country of origin.

Is this a general policy or is it school dependent?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Only GW has that kind of a rule for admission. If you want to practice here in the United States, after your graduation from a medical school, GW is probably not a good idea as they APPARENTLY make you sign some paperwork saying that you are going to go back to your home country after graduation. Dont get into legal hastles like that. .

Per the rules of immigration, International Students are allowed to practice in the US just like other grads as long as you are here on a Valid Visa (like H1 and J1 etc.. )

Post here if you have any other q's.

IntlMed

George Washington has a special program just for int'l students, and it's a 5-year MD program. It's geared towards people who will go back and practice in their own countries. That's why you heard that. If you goto other med schools, it's possible to apply and stay and work in the U.S.
