Yeah I have to say, if it was my arm or my friend's arm, and there was some chance to salvage it, I would be reaching for the gun........

(Assuming I could shoot with the remaining arm!)
 
The zoo vet I used to work with had lost one of his hands in a farming accident when he was younger. He always joked about how he needed to be extra careful with his other hand around the animals. It was really amazing to see him do procedures, he was an absolutely fantastic vet.
 
And then the following day a poor teenage zookeeper was killed by an anteater in Argentina...
