Hey guys,
If anyone took the kaplan course and the AAMC exams, do you think that kaplan topical tests and some other materials are much harder than the actual AAMC exams??

I thought that physics was much more calculation based with Kaplan. I was hardly ever able to completely finish their sections. On the real thing I had a little time to spare (less calculations). I thought Kaplan physics was good prep, though.

Verbal was comparable. Maybe a little more difficult than Kaplan.

Bio was a shock. I only had 2 organic passages, one of which was a pain in the rear. The rest of the test was just genetics/micro/immuno. There was hardly any physiology on my MCAT. Kaplan tended to concentrate on that more. So, make sure you bone up on the other stuff.

Good Luck!

Kaplan is not harder, it's different. Different question style, different topic emphasis on all 3 sections. The only thing that's more difficult is the excessive and ridiculous calculations required on a bunch of the PS sections. That will do nothing for your learning and will only increase your frustration.

You should do both K and AAMC as practice.

Yes, I felt that the topical exams were incredibly difficult - even compared to the Kaplan full lengths. The topical exams are definitely more difficult than anything I encountered on AAMC tests and on the real thing.

I do think they are good preparation, though. Everything else feels like a piece of cake in comparison. 😀

bio: i thought kaplan full lengths were pretty much on target with the aamc tests and the april mcat.

verbal: i actually thought aamc verbal was harder than kaplan. i thought the aamc questions were more ambiguous and for kaplan there was more of an obvious answer choice.

physics: same as what everyone else has said: kaplan physics is WAY more calculation intensive than the real thing
