I'm an international student and now I'm applying for away rotation in the US. I want to avoid the most competitive months when most US students do away rotation (because most medical schools will place US students first before consider an international student). So I want to know which months are most competitive and which months are least competitive?
Thanks in advance!

There are probably no official figures but I'd imagine the most competitive months to be June/July to September. And this is because most US seniors finish 3rd year in June and begin 4th year in July. And since residency applications open up for submission in September and most interviews are in Nov and Dec, most people want to be done with "away rotations" by September.

To avoid US seniors doing aways you should aim for Dec-May

Be aware that some programs don't offer sub-i's during those months. I know in ENT, the June-Dec months are for people "people interested in matching into this field" and are a more intensive rotation (call, etc), while the rotation during the Jan-May months is for people going into other fields (primary care, anesthesia, etc) who want exposure to the field but aren't going into it. Expectations about who you are change depending on when you rotate.

Generally, the early summer months (June/July) are the most competitive, both because thats when home institution students are doing their sub-i's, and when a lot of US allopaths try to do aways to land LORs for residency apps.
