Hello soon to be SMP class of '07,

I just wanted to congratulate everyone who have been accepted to SMP class of '07 and give a short advice / information for something that you may want to consider doing this summer.

I am one of the SMP class of '06 and I wanted to inform everyone about a summer anatomy class offered at Georgetown Medical School ( http://gsmi.georgetown.edu/ ). I took this class last summer before starting SMP and I thought that many SMP students could benefit from it. It certainly did for me. Unfortunately, I am the only one from the the last summer's class who continued on to SMP program so none of current SMP students may mention about it.

So basically, you spend 6 intense weeks (from middle of June to End of July) learning anatomy through lectures and hands-on dissection. On average, it is about 2 hours of lecture given by anatomy professors and 4 hours of dissection lab almost daily. We had to also take exams given to first year students as well. 😱 . It is a four credit class but the work load is more like 6.

As everyone knows, SMP students take all of first year core science classes except for anatomy. This summer class pretty much closes that gap. If you do well in anatomy it will certainly leave a good impression to medical schools as well.

Oh. I forgot to mention that there are other classes bundled called Physician and Society, which was very informative and make you think about what medicine is about and where is heading in the future. Also there are sessions for medical school applications and advices by SMP directors.

So if you are already set to start SMP in the Fall, it may not be a bad idea to get to Georgetown few weeks early, get campus housing for the summer, get to know the school, learn anatomy, and find a place to live for the Fall.

Anyhow, good luck to everyone and hopefully I will get to see everyone in the Fall.

James.

Thanks for the post, I applied for the SMI the same time I applied for the SMP at GT. I was wondering is that program (especially the Human Anatomy course) competitive to get in as well? I haven't heard anything from the SMI people and it's been three weeks. If anybody knows the answer that'd be really helpful.

Oh and another question, is there cadaver dissection? Now THAT would be worth it.

As far as I know the GSMI is not that competitive to get in. There is a requirement of 3.2 GPA.

The class size last summer was about 26 or so I think. Small group, so it was nice. And you do dissect cadavers, which was cool. All of the dissections are done by the students with help of professors and med students who are TAs.

There were a good mix of student from students who were still in college, non-traditional students like me, some dental students from another university , one student who was starting med school in Fall, a nurse, etc.

Good mix of people.

Hello, I am interested in the program but my main concern is the money. Add up tuition and the extra two months of rent and living expenses, the total cost for this summer session would be >$5000 at least. Were you able to get student loans? Because otherwise I have no way to finance this.

Also, did you find the gross anatomy class significantly help the classes in the fall?

Thanks

Yay, I got my acceptance for the SMI today. Not that it was competitive to get in, but at least I didn't get turned down by it cause that would just be sad. Don't think I'm going to go though, too expensive and I need money.

Yes the cost. It is understandable. The tuition is per credit basis but I was told that the class was decided as 4 credit since a higher credit would make the class even more expensive. Like I said the class is probaly equivalent to a 6 credit course in terms of work load. Also you get to dissect real human cadaver.

If the cost is much of a concern I would not push to take the class. I am not saying that it is a class that you must take but I do recommend if you can afford it. For most of us 5 grand is A LOT of money. I blew most of my savings on that class. I thought that it was worth it. I learned a great deal, learned how to dissect, and it will make first year anatomy class much easier once I start med school in Fall.

I also live in Maryland so I commuted and saved on living expenses. Did it help for classes in SMP? It did for embryology quite a bit and somewhat for physiology and neuroanatomy.

I did not get student loans paid it off out of my pocket since I was working full time for few years before deciding to apply to med school.
