well.. I want to be an optometrist, but before that...want to major in Biology. Well....I am trying to make my schedule for next year high school year....and this is my decision...I want to take classes such as English, AP Calculus, and Health this summer and have empty my half of my classes...so I can intern/job during my weekdays...and is it possible for me to go to the eye store and intern or have a simple job? what is a senior can do for optometry related? or should I just take more AP classes and not have a job? OR should I apply for Pharmacy job? I heard that you can take a job as a student intern/job...feedbacks? thanks!

Sure, you can work at an optical/optometrist's office! It will probably be easier for you to get hired at a commercial location since they don't usually require any experience. I didn't have any when I started working for my OD (although he knew me beforehand). I would write up a resume with your intentions and purpose and drop it off at some local offices. I think dropping it off in person will show them you're serious more than just calling around.

OR you could take more AP classes and possibly exempt yourself from some college classes- but the choice is yours! :luck:

yupyup!! hmm...what about wal-mart? o-0 they have a program for students! 🙂 I am so excited...hahaha...anyways...thansk!

Congrats, you're way ahead of the game!!

As far as jobs go, only thing I can really see is filing, maybe billing. I'm making the assumption that you're the "average" 17 year old, and I wouldn't want you interacting w/ patients.

I agree with JMU, make your intentions known, and let them know you plan on working there the next ~18 months.

One of the OD's I shadowed had a recent High school grad that worked as a tech. She had to work 4 months with one of the techs (unpaid) to learn the lingo. Now she works there full time or close to it taking charts for the OD as a paid position. Guess it just depends on how lucky you get.

you should consider taking more english clases to be honest.

I would also take more college classes to get those out of the way. The earlier you can get done with college the better. I got in opt school without any experience. It isn't necessary, but can help. But, if you can finish college a year early, that would be awesome. More awesome than working in an optometrists office.

You should too champ!

Don't mind him Joe. You are doing a great thing by showing interest this early, and as along as you do all the other things right (GPA, OAT, shadowing and other extracurricular activities) you should be solid for OD school!

I can't believe I am saying this, but I actually thought gochi's post was funny 😱

Mind sharing which school this is?

I believe experience is necessary. It could be as simple as being an office gopher or shadowing for 20 hours. Without getting your feet wet, how can you really know what happens in the profession?

We understand that. Go look at your previous post. 😀

an english class will not improve my "forum board" spelling or grammar if that is what you are suggesting, as i do not care.

Probably true - you'll probably be at least starting out doing filing and things like that. That's how I started, eventually started pre-testing, then moved over to the optical and began fitting glasses. Even if you do end up with a filing/dirty work job, you'll at least have experience being in an office and learning about how it works. It's important to have knowledge not just about what the doctor does, but how his/her office is run as well.
