Err . .. for how long DO they last. Just a quick question. If I took a year off before medical school, would a letter written at the end of sophomore year still count for the following application cycle?

I was wondering this too.....I was going to apply this year and filled out an application packet with the pre-health office, but I later decided to put off applying till next year. The pre-health office says I can use all the same letters, and they will just update the cover letter. Will any med schools have a problem with rec. letters dated from last year?

when i was applying, the pre-med committee recommended that all letters be as recent as possible. in retrospect, though, i wish i had asked a few of the professors to write right after they had me in class, so that the letters could be as detailed as possible. perhaps you can ask for one or two new letters, or ask old writers to update them, so that there are some fresh letters in your packet...

Perhaps check the expiration date printed on the back?

Right, good. Has anyone else been in this situation, or at least known one who has? And yes, the expiration date on the back of the letters I don't have must have been erased. Thanks again.
