For IMG applicant, do you specify visa type needed on ERAS?

How does it work for IMGs for ERAS?

For instance, when I apply next year, do I state on the ERAS that I will need a J1 visa?

Or is this only done at the interview stage?

thx,

Really? You don't want an H1B?

Well, the cons of H1b:

1. Very few hospitals sponsor H1b relative to J1. For instance, my friend said that out of 150 ER programs in the states, 30 do H1b. Almost all 150 do J1. So basically J1 opens the doors to 100 more hospitals (for ER).

2. I have to burn a year of internship here in the UK for H1b to process (graduate, then do Step 3)

3. For fellowships, lets say I match on H1b for GSurg or IM. Then I want to do a fellowship. Again, more hospitals are willing to take on IMGs on J1, and not deal with H1b headache. So if I want to do a trauma surg or surg onc fellowship after GSurg, J1 would again open up more doors.

4. H1b = 6 years. J1 = 7 Years. Not sure if this is important though.

So yeh, on the ERAS app, do I have to state that I want a visa (whether its J1 or H1b) ?

yes, you should state that you want a visa, but unfortunately, this year they didn't put an option to chose from H1 or J1. this is how it was on my application.

Citizenship:Foreign National Currently in the U.S. with Valid Visa Status Visa Type: B-1 - Temporary visitor for business USMLE ID: XXXXXXX Visa Sponsorship Needed: Yes Expected Visa Type(s):

Wouldn't you put H1/J1 as the expected visa type (which is blank above)?

if you are a foreign National, outside the U.S. or currently in the U.S. in valid visa status, please respond: Will you need "visa sponsorship" through ECFMG or the teaching hospital in order to participate in U.S. residency training?

Yes No Uncertain *

this was how it showd on my application!

Yes, I called ERAS today to review this. They revamped it from last year. Somehow the visa requested seems to have gotten lost in the process. Not sure if that was by design or a mistake. I have submitted it as a possible bug / upgrade for next year.

Yes. It does not let you input what type of Visa you want.

Thx for the replies guys...

so this year is bit of a glitch then? Normally you can specify the visa type?

Interesting...thanks Aprogdirector for calling out ERAS on it...hopefully it will be fixed when I apply for 2012 match
