The clinic that I've been volunteering for has made me the volunteer supervisor, or the head of volunteers, awhile back. I have responsibilities where I must train new volunteers, make the schedule for volunteers, order patient lab work, make sure the clinic is open and closed on time, etc.

I've never joined any student organizations in college therefore I had no officer positions. Could my experience as a head volunteer validate for leadership experience? I also get to shadow various healthcare professionals at my clinic, so wasn't sure if I could use my tasks at the clinic for clinical experience and leadership experience.

I would definitely include this in the leadership section since you're in charge of the volunteers and train them. Another note: if you ever have questions about your application, do NOT hesitate to call the help phone number provided by AACOMAS. I used their service/suggestions a few times and it definitely made things easier.

Yes it can, but just dont add another entry in other parts of your app. Build upon this work experience and cultivate it to show how you were "selected" and talk about the leadership experiences you will have had by then.

Just a word of caution, "never joined any student organization" vs "no officer position", are two very things, I take it that you were never involved in any organization? If you have time, Id join something that interests you because you dont want to come off as a book worm, plus its a great ice breaker during interviews.

Clinical experience with what you did is fine, but try to get something that enables you to get more direct patient contact in taking histories, chief complaints, and reviewing systemic conditions during first contact.

YAS, nice job getting that position buddy

Thanks, mayne. =)

Thank you. I did recently call them about coursework and transcript issues. I didnt know they offered suggestions and help aside from the technical part of the application, how else did they help you?

I was involved in one college organization but nothing related to pre medicine.

Aside from my duties as head of volunteers: I take patient vitals, record current and past medical issues, and shadow healthcare professionals. I enjoy building rapport with patients so next time they see me they are comfortable knowing that they can rely on me to address their issues to the physician. I also assist the physicians by translating between patients who don't speak english. We help underserved communities so we get to see a lot of different kinds of patients.
