..when does that mean they applied (ish). Excuse my ignorance 🙁
I'm not sure what you mean by this but it's ok. I think you're talking about the 2012-13 cycle and how late they applied to be getting an acceptance as late as now. Well, from what I;ve gathered, getting an acceptance now is not only about having a late application though. It's about having a borderline application. By now, most med schools have filled their opening class. The following is just an educated guess but this is the order at which I think students are filled:
Students from direct admit programs > Very Competitive/Good Match URMs > Very Competitive/Good Match early applicants > Competitive URMs > Competitive Applicants
now...at this point they've filled a significant portion of the class. Now what I think they do is look at borderline applicants who applied early and send them interviews/acceptances. After this, as unfair as it is, I really think you're at an advantage if you have what the medical school is missing in terms of diversity. If you're Hispanic and XYZ medical school hasn't admitted a lot of Hispanic people then it might give you a slight edge. Same goes for things like speaking another language, being a member of a sex (most likely female), are of an uncommon age, having some totally unique background, etc. So basically once the medical schools are nearly filled they look to make sure they're class is balanced in terms of demographics. Also, late in this period, I know is when the SMP students (students who go to do a masters degree at XYZ university most commonly in the medical sciences) are accepted XYZ medical school as I think they do the SMP with an understanding if they do well they'll have a good shot at XYZ medical school...
Overall, to get back to your question, getting an acceptance now is more likely due to a factor mentioned above rather than a late application, although a late application can sure contribute knowing if you're accepted last minute. It's just not the only contributing factor though.
