do they really just look primarily at your GPA and ECs to determine your admission?

GPA, work experience, extracurricular (volunteer, leadership), pharmacy experience, letters of recommendations, interview, etc... the entire package is looked at. 🙂

Ditto to imprecious's post. The UC's look for well-rounded applicants. I think really great essays are crucial to getting an interview when you have a decent amount of everything else listed above. Of course, the essay is not the only thing that matters. 🙂
