The holidays are upon us, and it would seem that many of us will be going home to see relatives and catch up with old friends. My birthday happens to fall in December, and this year my girlfriend got me a hoody from my top choice's book store that says

"U of X
School of Medicine"

in pretty modest lettering. I've already gotten in to the school and probably will be attending, so when I got it I was pretty stoked. I'll freely admit that I don't have a problem with a little well-deserved gloating, but now I'm wondering exactly how tool-ish it would be to wear something like that for casual stuff (Buying x-mas presents, hanging out w/ friends for example). I'd like to avoid crossing the line between "Proud" and "Proud tool".

For those of you who have already been accepted, and know where you're going, what's the consensus on wearing your soon-to-be alma matter's gear? Anybody else plan on sporting their school's gear before they start?

If it's comfortable, wear it. Don't care what other people think. You go to the school haha.

i wear my harvard med school t shirt all the time. bought it when i was in 9th grade. it automatically makes you a billion times hotter.

Wear it to your heart's content.

You earned it.

wear it because it's comfortable, but don't wear it to show off. (ie. people wearing white-coats, scrubs outside the hospital to show off). Imo, I'd probably only wear it at home as hoodies are good to lounge around in. Plus, you aren't a med student just yet...

I'd probably be wearing a XYZ University Football sweatshirt right now if I knew where I was going.

Wear it all you want. 👍

I'm gonna go against the grain and advise waiting until you've actually started school. If you want to wear gear from the school, go ahead, but until you're actually a med student, the "U of Wherever School of Medicine" shirt is going to look a little pretentious. Getting accepted doesn't make you a medical student, and you'll figure out just how true that is when school starts.

I see this point but don't agree with it. The minute I got accepted into college I had the sticker on my car and the shirt, like 90% the seniors at my high school. Just wear it. I would wear a hoodie anywhere. They're awesome lol.

I am inclined to agree here. You can wear the University of Wherever swag whenever you want, but leave the school of medicine stuff for after you've set up shop in these hallowed halls. 👍

It's just medical school... it's not hogwarts.

Agreed. Just imagine the conversation:

Random person: You go to Med School University!? That's pretty cool.
You: Actually, I've only been accepted, but I'm probably going there next year.
RP: Ohh...that's cool too...I guess.

You're not a student there yet. Hang on tight and wait till school starts. Then again, wearing a sweatshirt in August might not be the greatest idea.

Btw, do you get a lot of free t-shirts in med school for random stuff? I've gotten so many of these in undergrad.

It's just medical school... it's not hogwarts.

yeah, i know i'm not in med school....but i think sometimes we all, in the words of 40 yr old virgin, put the "kitten" on a pedestal. if you're not some smug guy doing it to impress your ex gf's parents, what's the harm? do what makes you happy.

I would wear it if I WAS going there next year... not if I was "probably" going there.

The people who think you'd be a tool for wearing the sweater are most likely douche bags themselves. They're probably med students who somehow think they're better than you just because they've actually been in school for a few years. Just wear the shirt and don't over think it too much.

Hey, wear what you want. I'm just telling you that it's probably going to be a little awkward explaining to people who ask why you're wearing med school clothing when you aren't a med student. You'll get particularly weird reactions from people in med school or medicine. I know I'd be a little skeptical of someone who'd just gotten accepted wearing a UAMS shirt. It absolutely screams, "I have no idea what I'm in for."

Haha, I actually agree with you. My comment was to the person above me who referred to medical school as those hallow halls.

Why does nobody have any idea what they're in for?

a freshman in my school has one of these.

I mean couldn't you just explain to them that you've been accepted and will start next year? It doesn't seem like it'd be too weird for me... but I generally don't care about that sort of ****.

Now, maybe you could make the case that you shouldn't wear the shirt if you haven't been accepted to the school yet... but then again, its just a ****ing shirt, who cares?

When I first got into Vandy, I did nothing. When I decided I'd definitely be going, I bought a couple of things like a Vanderbilt sweatshirt (no "school of medicine" thing) and a sticker for my mom's car, which I told her not to use until I started (just in case people asked her).
At second look weekend, I got some free swag, including a t-shirt. I wore that around the house, but not in public (again, just in case someone in the medical field asked me what I was studying...). Once I matriculated, I got to wear my swag in public 😀

I don't own a single piece of clothing/keychain/etc from my undergrad. Probably won't buy any for med school if I get accepted either. They are usually ugly and I don't need to show the world I go to school there.

Do what ya want though. And congrats!

for people who ask why we think med school as the **** and advise you to not wear it before school starts.

I am too busy to buy my school's swag, and the book store is about 3 feet away from the elevator I go to class in.

That should say something.

It's just medical school... it's not hogwarts.

We like to think of it as Hogwarts. That probably explains a lot.

As to free shirts, it's probably school-specific, but I haven't gotten that many--maybe 2. Then again, I've only been here 5 months...

I disliked my undergrad, so I never wore the gear from there. The day I got my med school acceptance I ordered a shirt with the school on it. It's a reminder of my good fortune, and I have worked very hard to get here.

I especially like to wear it while around family members who used to tell me I would amount to nothing. 😀

I say wear it if you want. It would be weird if you were not actually going there, but since you are I don't see what the big deal is.

EDIT: If you are going to UWSOM though, be prepared to explain it since you can't walk around western Washington without being a stones throw away from a UW grad.

See that's what I was thinking. That once I start what I wear will be the absolute least of my concerns and wearing school gear will totally lose its novelty...

seriously. it's just a shirt. and we have "no idea" what we're in for next year? well, I'm pretty sure I will have neither the time nor the inclination to come onto sdn and criticize future med students for their choice of t-shirts.

amakhosidlo, I think it was sweet and thoughtful of your girlfriend to get you the shirt

I really don't think it's a big deal. Just because you wear a shirt doesn't mean you go there. I see people wandering around my undergrad campus with other college gear on all the time. You could just know someone who goes there. Or just like it. I have a jacket from a med school that I didn't even apply to and I wear it quite a bit. People have asked me if I'm gonna go there, and I simply say, "Nope, it's from a friend." Easy enough explanation. Saying you're accepted is an even easier explanation.

I understand that you med students go through a lot and deserve what you've worked for, but it's not like someone wearing a shirt is taking anything away from your accomplishments.

And it was (and is). The question, though, is about when it's situationally appropriate to wear it. Where it whenever, but prepare for awkward if questioned before enrolling.

I, for one, love my school swag (it's warm and not garish, you see). It'll also be a great memory of my own personal (first) four years of hell. 😀

Yet you're not too busy to be posting about shirts in the pre-allo thread? 🙂

i love people that were duke clothes that don't even go there. like what the **** is wrong with you? i can understand any other team/school though

No need to get defensive. I only encourage you to be aware of the consequences of your actions. If you don't care that people think you're getting a bit ahead of yourself, great. That's your call.

edit: You'll notice that the 5 med students who've chimed in have all had opinions ranging from kind of against wearing the stuff to against wearing the stuff, while the pre-meds are all for it. That, in itself, should be informative.

It's just medical school... it's not hogwarts.

Hey... Severus Snape is listed as a faculty member in my school's Introduction to Disease, Immunity, and Therapeutics class syllabus.

the consequences of our actions? perhaps if you were talking about something like, say, drinking and driving, I could take you seriously. but the "action" here is wearing a t-shirt! who cares? I mean, I run marathons and I often see people out and about who are wearing t-shirts from some of the races I have run. I do not go out of my way to interrogate them about whether they actually ran the marathon. and if the issue does come up in the course of normal social interaction and it turns out that the person didn't run it, I do not care, I am not offended, I do not feel that my experience is in any way cheapened by the fact that there are people out there in Boston Marathon t-shirts who did not actually run the Boston Marathon. who cares??? ksmi said it best (upthread), how can someone else's choice of t-shirt detract from your experience? and if you feel it does, then maybe your motivations aren't the deepest

anyhow, don't be offended Mr. Milkman. I like your avatar (truth). I like milk. are you really a milkman?🙂

i also agree. on both topics. also, do/did you watch salad fingers? probably in hs

not sure if you're asking me or the good milkman, but I am not familiar with this. however, being the resourceful person I am I wiki'd it and it looks like something I would like

I also like the Simpsons (and thus, your avatar)🙂

It's not toolish!! Toolish are like people that wear College sweatshirts as a freshman in high school..

Toolish is also wearing it if you don't even go there...that is also kind of lame.

BTW - I believe my friend's Harvard sweatshirt got a bunch of us out of a lot of trouble with the cops. We were partying at his house in Berkeley and someone called the cops on us. None of us were 21 but the cops saw a Harvard and Berkeley shirt and totally let us go. I think it shows that you are smart and responsible.

Wear it proud!!!

How is it toolish to wear something from a school you don't go to? It's not like wearing a shirt is like claiming you go there. It's just a way to support the school.

I bought a Case Western shirt after I got accepted. I look super cool in it. It doesn't say "medicine", but I still look cool. People down here are like "that's a long name for a school"

It's an awesome shirt, I'm sure.😀. I do so :biglove: my Case hoodie. Granted, it only says "Case."

haha yeah you were wearing that hoodie on my interview day, but I'm pretty sure we didn't meet. I was a slow poster on the Case thread and missed all that eggplant business 😕

I would wear clothing bearing a school's name without thinking too much about it (and if I was affiliated of course) but I would be much more careful if it said "School of Medicine" under it.

Haha, I just wanted to say that I watched salad fingers a lot in high school and loved it. I wouldn't watch it at a party... but if you're twisted enough its a fun watch.
