I took a class with my PI, not a pre-req, but a 2 unit (normal class is 4) graduate level class, it's classified under a type of bio and belongs under the bio/med school department. I did get an A in the class and it is on my transcript.

Is it okay for me to use this letter as one of my 2 science ones? Since it's nowhere near being a pre-req, is a small graduate class related to my lab work and not a typical huge lecture premed science class?

If it's under a science classification and if he can write that he taught you bio in the LOR that would be great.

Since it's a small graduate class, it'd be even better because he can genuinely say that he knows you.

So go for it if you think he can write a great letter!
