That’s right. You have to apply now if you apply for ortho. Some ortho programs (ie Tufts) have the application deadline as early as August 15th. If you apply for ortho, you have to start going around asking your dental school’s faculty to write you the letters now. If you wait for the GPR director to write you the letter, it will be too late. By the time I started my GPR residency in July, I had already sent out the application packages to the programs that had the August 15th deadline. I got 4 letters from:
1. The school’s Dean because many ortho programs required it. Since I wasn’t ranked top 10 in my class, the assistant dean wrote that letter for me.
2. The school’s ortho chairman because many ortho programs required it. My school’s ortho chair quit so I had to ask the acting chair, who chaired the pedo department, to write the letter for me. Neither the former chair nor the acting chair knew who I was so it was probably a very weak letter.
3. My research mentor, who was an ortho faculty and who did my braces.
4. My fixed prosth bench instructor.
