Hello All,

I have seen multiple threads over the past month or so in which some of you are trying to make the difficult decision between OSUCOD and some other school. I thought it might be helpful to get some insight from someone who actually attends the school, other than other predents who have just visited. For those who are questioning the reliability of my advice, because who knows, i may not have had an option and may have only gotten into one school, I was actually accepted to 4 different dental schools, and was lucky enough to choose OSU in the end.

Cost: A lot of people have mentioned in previous posts that the OP should lean towards OSU because of the low cost of tuition. Although this is very true, and you will be thanking yourself in the end when you have saved yourself hundreds of thousands of dollars, this is not the only reason to attend OSU, and is actually not even the most important reason.

Staff: The staff and faculty at OSU are more than helpful. They go out of their way to make sure you succeed. There have been a few occasions through my year or so at OSU COD where I have needed to meet with an instructor. I had no problem scheduling a time with them right away. I even met with one over Christmas break, which no faculty member is required to do. The faculty will take the time out of their schedule to help you out at all costs. Furthermore, since I have started school, all I have heard from the staff is "we will get you through this" The people at the school will do whatever it takes to get you through the program, as long as you aren't lazy and you do your part. OSU does not want people to fail, and they are not about weeding people out. They select their students because they want them, and they will do whatever it takes to help them succeed.

Prestige: Now most of you don't put the words "OSUCOD" and "Prestige" together, but you would be surprised how wrong you are. I have heard from multiple working dentists, most of which have never attended OSUCOD, about how difficult it is to even get at interview at OSUCOD nowadays. OSU has raised their standards dramatically, where students should have atleast a 3.7 and a 20 DAT score. The class of 2014 has an average cGPA of 3.72 and a sGPA of 3.65 while the average dat scores are slightly above a 20 across the board. I have heard that the class of 2014 has the highest average GPA of any other professional school at OSU. Furthermore, I have heard that the class of 2015 has the highest stats in the colleges history! Therefore, if you were accepted to OSU, that is quite an accomplishment and is something that you can really be proud of. When you graduate and say you recieved your degree of OSUCOD, the response you will get will be "Wow, OSUCOD is a really great school, and incredibly tough to get into!" Just think how this will impact you when you are trying to find a job. I have already recieved this response multiple times from people and I haven't even graduated yet.

Clinics and Specializing: OSU is known for their strong clinic experience. You start out in clinics your first quarter at OSU, practicing on eachother, so they throw you in it right away. I have yet to hear a problem about people getting patients and being able to finish their requirements in time (Not to say there aren't any problems, just not enough to dwell on...there are problems at every school) Also, OSU has a high rate of their students specializing. OSU also offers these specialties in their graduate programs.

Student Body: Everyone is incredibly nice. We all understand how difficult this program is, and we try to stick together and help eachother at all times. Of course there are gunners, like at every school, but overall, our entire class is really close. We work hard together and play hard together.

Technology: I'm sure most of you know that OSUCOD is not the most technologically up to date. In saying this, keep in mind, that this does not mean the technology is not available to use, there just isn't enough for each individual student, and most of this equipment are found in the specialty clinics. We start out learning how to do things the original way, and once we master these techniques, we are trained to use the equipment that will do most of the work for us. Keep in mind, that when you graduate, you have no idea what type of practice you will be working in. Not all practices have the most up to date technology, and if they don't have the equipment that you only learned to use in dental school, then you will be in big trouble once you start practicing. Also, what if you are working in a practice, and a particular machine breaks, but you need to prep a crown, and never learned how to do it by hand, your screwed! Sure, all of this tools are nice to have and will make your life in dental school a fraction, if that, easier, but there is no saying that this stuff will be available in your future practice.

Columbus: C-bus is an amazing place to live! There is so much to do at all times, and you will never be bored (if you find the time to do anything but study!) I have lived in a couple of places before Columbus, and this city is by far my favorite! The campus is also amazing! I have found out that from visiting other dental schools, OSU is the place for you if you want the option of big city life, but you still want the campus feel. The college of dentistry isn't just a building stuck in the middle of downtown, which is what I noticed at a lot of other schools. Finally, you will get a chance to attend all of the football games (which is an experience in itself) and mirror lake jump before the michigan game (youtube mirror lake jump and you will see what I mean🙂 )

Well, thats all I got for ya. Thanks to all who have taken the time to read this. Sure, I may be biased because I go to school here, but keep in mind that I did have the option to attend other schools. Good luck to all if you in your future decisions!😀

And one more thing: GO BUCKS!!!!

What year are you? Are you sure you don't work in the admissions office? lol. In any case, it's good to hear someone who is having a good experience at OSU. I'm attending there next fall.

I assure you I do not work for the admissions office, even though my post may seem like it! Haha. No, I am just a regular student, just wanted to get the message across that its not all about low tuition. Congrats on getting into OSU. You will love it!

I've heard the same positive opinions from every OSU student I've met, so I'm pretty sure the OP does not work for admissions. Anyway, thank you for such a detailed thread...I look forward to attending this fall...GO BUCKS!!

OSU college atmosphere is awesome (especially if you like football). And they defiantly has the best recruitment team out of all the schools I interviewed at.

My inner buckeye definitely makes it tough to turn down the offer, but oh well. 🙁

Maygyver...Where you decide on going??

I put my deposit down at Columbia. Harvard is my top choice right now, and I'll see how I like UCLA at the interview. But for me, I would rather pay the extra money, which isn't that much in the grand scheme, to get a change of scenery. I also preferred Columbia's medical school integration. Also, talking to current students at Columbia, I feel like their clinical preparation has been getting better, in addition to their amazing post grad numbers. All in all, Columbia was just the better pick for me. If OSU's tuition was similar to most of the other public schools, I might have picked there, but to me it just isn't worth it.
