For those of you who already are in medical school and who wrote a letter of intent:

I've made my decision on my first choice school and I want to write a letter of intent to get off the waitlist. I am not sure exactly how to go about doing this. Should I just write that the schools is absolute #1 choice and that I intend to matriculate if I am pulled off the waitlist and keep the letter short? Would it be a good idea to say that my #1 choice remains my #1 choice even after interviewing at several other med schools?

Is it better to try to somehow prove that I will matriculate? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Writing the school and letting them know that they are your #1 choice and you would definitely go if pulled off the waitlist is the way to go. Keep it short and simple. Include the reasons why you feel that the school is for you. Its ok to say that this particular school remains your #1 choice after all of your interviews, in my opinion. I wrote letters last year saying something to that effect. Mine were more update letters/e-mails letting the school know that I was still interested and would definitely attend if given the chance. I ended up getting off of the waitlist shortly after may 15. Now, I don't know if the letters helped, but they certainly couldn't have hurt. Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I just wrote my LOI and I'm taking it to the med school tomorrow.

One last piece of advice for others: try to make it personal. I did the LOI successfully, and made sure to include references to specific experiences during my interview trip that convinced me that this school was my #1 choice. Highlighting how nice, or helpful your student host was (if you had one), or how great a talk you had with an interviewer, or tour guide are examples.
