Our school allowed us to choose from a few general criteria (how far are you willing to drive, interest in rural medicine, Internal or Family Medicine) then they assigned us to a primary care physician for our preceptorship program. We had to shadow them once during first year and then once a month during second year. I hope this helps.

for the school program, we could suggest someone or get assigned. I got my son's pediatrician.
For my summer experience i really kept a good eye out during the fall semester because some are due early. as it turns out i ended in one that i applied to last minute. google seraches are good. if you look nwo maybe you can get on a mailing list for next year's programs.
