For Those that Haven't Recieved Interviews to TX schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When did you have everything turned in?

Ya, For some reaseon I don't feel like I am being given a fair shot here. I have experience out the wazoo, 4.0 in grad school, an excellent personal statment that shows I have matured since the last time I applied and my overdriving passion for medicine, three beyond excellent LOR's, everythning complete my mid May, and doing exactly what the adcoms said they wanted to see out of me to get an interview this time. I haven't heard SQUAT!

I don't want you to start calling me an a$$hole again, but I'm not sure if you have always been given the best advice. Based on your side of things, you should be getting some attention from ADCOM's. What have recent visits to the local advisor lead to? Is the MCAT good? Overall GPA? Did you have several people review your personal statement? Dr Jones @ UTSA has told stories recently of great app's being rejected because of something in the personal statement not sitting well. Keep trying........

Dr. Jones has personaly reviewed my file and did not give much advice. He basicly said leave it up to the committee. My personal statment was reviewed by other admissions personel and they LOVED it. My undergrad GPA is unquestionably bad, and that is one thing Dr. Jones said is questionable and that my grad work may help. Which I do not understand because I have to use my undergraduate knowlege all the time to succeed in graduate school. I though my 4.0 in grad school would show that my undergrad is not a true reflection of my ability, I guess not. I schooled all the Ph.D's on my advanced biochem class, wrote a paper that my professor kept for her own files in my clinical pharm class, wrote numerous papers that my mentor has just simply inserted into her grants, and I have a medical director that went to UTSA that is bending over backwards to help me out. I could just be neurotic, but I thought for sure with my file they would want to meet me to just to understand my nontraditional approach. I've had people PM me that are in medical school that had similar situations and they all say its a crap shoot at this point. My medical director was a 4th year adcom at UTSA and on the ADCOM at UT houston during his residency. He says it is the most unscientific process in the world and the only certinanty is if you have good numbers, for the average applicants things start to get fuzzy and all depends on who is the primary screener on your application.

BTW, when did I ever call you an anal orfice?

Old post a long time ago when you were a newbie. I thought you were giving someone some shortsighted advice and you responded by "adorning" me "a$$hole". No big deal 😉

I'm in at my 1st choice and my app had everything to do with #'s since I'm an engineer and don't have **** for expirience. You seem like a very good candidate.

Engineers rock again

Reviving this thread😳

It was EDP and my acceptance is only "word of mouth" at this point. A dept chair I know asked the director for me. Soooooo, it's not official until I have the signed piece of paper saying it is. That should come soon 😀

Feels good, but to a certian degree it just feels like taking care of business...... one more thing down, fifty more to go before I'm a real doc. Honestly, I'm bit more excited about moving and getting my family back into a house again (short sighted thinking). We're going to look at some pads this weekend....

I feel I am in the EXACT same boat as trauma_junky.

However... I applied this year to MANY out of state schools and I already have interviews with them. This process is so frustrating and I feel there is something much different that the Texas schools look for than the other schools.

Trauma_junky if I were you I'd also focus on out of state schools. I didn't think I had a shot with them because my state schools were ignoring me but apparently this is not the case.

Megalofyia:

Ya, it seems everyone I talk to says I'm an excellent applicant, but no love so far. So, what have I've learned about the process so far, don't trust anyone. They all keep harping on my undergrad, when they are the ones that told me to do grad school. They can blow it out their ass. $35k later and no closer that I was when I started. I feel like sending them a bill! Maybe take their lying asses to cort even. I have never felt so lied to!

I've known "good" applicants who took three app. cycles to get in. Keep trying.

thackl,

The point here is that the schools are wrecklessly giving advise and not following through with what they advise. They are screwing with my life (not to mention my wife and son's). If they are so concerned about my undergrad, why the hell did they not recomend post bach stuff! I just wish there was some accountability on their part. I mean a 4.0 in graduate school, what am I doing wrong?

Hello guys,
I am also a reapplicant who didn't get in two years ago and have sinced then having been doing research at UTSA in an attempt to strengthen my application. I also retook the MCAT last year and actually got 1 point lower than I did two years ago prior to taking the initial test (by the way my MCAT scores were less than national average). My GPA is average and the rest of my application is pretty interesting i.e worked in patient care 5 years in Army, 2 years doing clinical research, and several other medically related activites. At any rate, I thought that I would apply this year, in hopes that the ADCOM's would see my dedication to become a physician, although I am willing to take the MCAT a third time and apply for a third time. Having said all this, my application was sent out on 8/6/03 and I haven't heard anything yet. I would like to think that they just finished first round interviews and are deciding on who to invite for the second round and that is why I haven't got an interview. I'm trying to keep the faith but it's really hard when I check the mailbox and there is nothing in it. Actually there is secondaries from some out-of-state DO schools that I applied to (Fortunately, they are looking pretty promising). Well, I think that I have taken up enough space here. Good Luck to all and let's try to keep our faith as we know that everything will work out for the best.
Thanks for listening,
Keith

Do you mean less than 24? That's tough to overcome. Too bad one test means so much to the ADCOM's.

Trauma, I agree about the schools giving bad advice. If you think the garbage the med schools feed you is bad, try going to an undergrad advisor. If I had listened to the old biach at UT, I'd be taking Org1 this semester, the MCAT next spring and applying next year. I am so thankful my brother talk me out of retaking the physical sciences.

I go to UT and I totally agree with you on this stuff. The premed advisors don't know squat. I stopped going to them after my sophomore year when I realized that none of them have been on an adcom other than the old lady (I forget her name).
